Kyoto Station is not just a place to catch a train, but a renovated place with a new touch of class.
As the likely starting point for any sightseeing in Kyoto, it is well worth checking out. The tourist info office on the 2nd floor has lots of good resources and free maps, and the view from the top commands a great view. Close by is the iconic Kyoto Tower Hotel,
built in 1964, along with the discount Yodobashi Camera store. There are 2 light shows at night you can see for free, one in front of the station’s north side, and another inside.
In addition, there is a tourist info office, hotel, cinema, shopping mall and department store. The building is 15 stories (70m) high, 470m long, and was completed in 1997. It’s Kyoto’s fourth version of the station, replacing a more utilitarian concrete one from 1950.
