Powerful tropical typhoon Lan hit Japan just a week after the devastating typhoon Khunun. More than 18,000 residents of Tottori Prefecture in western Japan have been isolated from the outside world due to the impact of the elements. The typhoon destroyed 4 bridges, and the resulting landslides blocked all roads.
Typhoon Lan hit the coast of Japan this morning, becoming the first typhoon to cross the country this year. The typhoon crossed Osaka Bay and moved into the Akashi area of Hyogo Prefecture later that day, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Further, the typhoon hit the northern part of the country along the coast of the Sea of Japan.
Along its entire path, the typhoon left behind a trail of strong winds, heavy rains, landslides and severe flooding. Highways were washed out and submerged, the authorities urged more than 240,000 residents to evacuate to safe areas. The typhoon’s impact on the central and western parts of Japan was the strongest. Overflowing rivers led to flooding of communities, landslides damaged dozens of buildings, more than 150 thousand houses were de-energized.
According to authorities, 78 people were injured in eight prefectures. Due to the elements, transport links were disrupted in western and central Japan.
The typhoon has now weakened to a tropical storm and winds at its epicenter do not exceed 75 km/h (47 mph). Lan is located in the northern part of the Sea of Japan and is heading towards Sakhalin Island, Russia. It is expected to further weaken and gradually disappear within 3-4 days.
