Dr. Yellow is the nickname for the Shinkansen Electric Track Comprehensive Test Vehicle.
It takes two days to check out all sections of Tokaido Shinkansen and Sanyo Shinkansen (Tokyo to Hakata: about 1,100 km) and is consider “The Doctor” of the Shikasen.
Normally, passengers are not allowed to ride in inspection cars, but this time, an event was held for three days from August 22 to 24 to experience riding in the cars. Only 300 people who were selected by lottery were able to participate in the event, making it a rare opportunity.
We made this video to share with everyone what JR Tokai is doing, such as how it looks on the inside of the train and safety tips that you cannot usually see. Through this experience, we learned about the efforts in keeping Shinkansen trains safe, and we really appreciate their dedication and hard work.

– The Dr. Yellow experience ride event is held on an irregular basis. It may be held again in the future.
You need to be a member of EX Service (free online reservation service for Shinkansen) to apply for the event. EX Service offers a free membership so we recommend registering if you are interest.
– Dr. Yellow has two stopping patterns: three times a month at the same stops as Nozomi and once every two months at the same stops as Kodama.
Because there is no fixed timetable, chances of spotting Dr. Yellow are very low; and thus, it is said that seeing Dr. Yellow will make you happy.
