Are you planning a road trip in Japan?
Kiso district is located in the southwestern part of Nagano prefecture and approximately 90 percent of this area is covered by forest. As a result, one of the town’s features is its woodwork, ranging from bowls with beautiful wood grain patterns to exquisite furniture. Japanese Lacquer works of this area are also famous.
This time, we’re driving from Kiso-Fukushima, the central town of the Kiso district, to Kaida highlands.

Fukushima-juku is a rest station of Nakasendo trail that connected Tokyo and Kyoto in the Edo period. There was a checkpoint that played a role in guarding the movement of people and firearms during the Edo period.

Kaida highlands extend to the east of Mt. Ontake, with an altitude of over 1,000 meters (3,281 feet). This region is renowned as a breeding ground for Kiso-Uma, a native Japanese horse breed. At “Kisouma-no-sato”, You can observe small Japanese horses and enjoy horseback riding.

Mt. Ontake is an active volcano that recently erupted in 2014. It is the second highest volcano in Japan after Mt. Fuji at 3,067 m (10,062 feet). Mt. Ontake has a rich history of mountain worship and was formerly climbed exclusively by pilgrims. Even today, pilgrims dressed in white attire can still be spotted sometimes on mountain trails.
