hmmm,… a relative works for JR East … I get special perks ! including special commemorative Suica (^_^) … sadly being dragged back to Japan this week !
I scored a physical Suica card with the ten year limit, cause I don't like using most apps on phones. I still found this video interesting and informative. I note that JR just released an updated price list on all their regional passes as well as the JR system wide pass, that most travellers to Japan are familiar with and have used for years. When the Ninja Monkey is in Japan and going here there and everywhere he is a Happy Gaijin.
I will travel from Osaka, Kyoto to Tokyo in April 2024. Buying a JR pass end September 2023 won’t work because of the 3 month validation or is that not and issue anymore? Not understanding if it’s possible to buy early and use 7 months later😊

I ended up getting the registered Suica (and also an unregistered Icoca card in Kyoto) since I really wanted to collect them. It's kind of sad that Suica registration doesn't work on Google Wallet/Pay.

Unfortunately this option of adding Suica on the phone doesn't work if you are located outside Japan. I am in Australia and although it adds Suica to Apple wallet, top up fails as I am outside Japan. Any ideas how to bypass that?.,
I got mine real cheap from ebay tho. I intended it as a souvenir without knowing about suica being scarce, etc.
Found my old suica from 7 years ago deep in my closet and it still works! Can't wait to be in Japan in October.

Do you have to be connected to cellular or data to use the card? I usually am connected using my cell connection but my travel partner keeps their phone in airplane mode.
Someone may have already mentioned this but the japan-experince website sells the regular 10 year Suica for $23 (2 day shipping was $9). 2000yen preloaded (incl the 500 deposit). Just showed up in the mail. One less thing to worry about.. Just in case..

Can I top up the Suica in my phone at the machine using cash?
From what I understand there were the 10 year suica card, where you can get your balance back, the 28 days suica card, where you can not get the balance back, and the suica on your iPhone. The iPhone version, do you need to pay something to activate it? Can you get the balance back?
U.S. users have trouble with mobile Suica if trying to attach a Visa CC to the Apple Wallet. It doesnt work. Had to use MC or AX.
Sadly currently in Japan. The heat and humidity are utter misery but I have to visit relatives for Obon. It looks like my Osaka relative is really going to get hit with typhoon 7.
