Hiking through Jigokudani area of Noboribetsu, otherwise known as Hell Valley. It is named this way because of all the hot springs, steam and bubbling ponds that elicit images of hell.
Even though it looks barren, there is plenty to see (and smell) here. The terrain is interesting as well as the colors of the rocks, likely from the sulphur. It’s a beginner hike with some intermediate sections, when descending into Oyunuma Pond. That is a good area to see the steam rising from the pond.
The water from that pond feeds a natural foot bath, which was an interesting experience. Next, I head into the Noboribetsu Onsen town, which is not the same as Noboribetsu town. The onsen town has many hotels and the usual touristy shops, but also many demon statues. Some are hard to miss like the large blue one towering over the side of the road, but there are also some tiny ones hidden around.
It’s not a densely populated area, as evidenced by the deer that see just hanging out in town.
