Located 1,2000 meters above sea level the Kirifuri Highland is on the slopes of Mt. Akanagi. In June and July, the area is covered in golden Nikko Kisuge / Dwarf Day Lily. On a clear day, you can see the Pacific Ocean, Tokyo, and Mt. Fuji.

The day I went up was not a clear day. Rain awoke me from my slumber on the observation platform. After taking 4 trains, walking 11 kilometers, and taking 1445 steps I was treated to a rainy day and limited visibility. I still got to look at the lily’s that cover the mountainside and made plans to come back to hike the mountain in the fall.

Even with the less-than-ideal weather I enjoyed the trip and was treated to a beautiful mountainside filled with day lilies. I might not recommend my way of getting to Kirifuri Highland to everyone. They have a bus that goes from Nikko station up to the plateau.
