Yamagata prefecture in the Tohoku region has amazing heritage, culture, cycling, hiking, onsens, sake, and stunning landscapes to offer visitors but is still one of the least visited areas of Japan.
Derek Yamashita is a University of California, Santa Barbara grad who first came to the Tohoku area as a JET teaching participant. He now runs a certified travel company with a passion for providing information, tours and experiences for domestic and international visitors to the Yamagata area.
As a local guide with many ties to local businesses and experts, Derek talks about the appeal of the area and unique travel stories of Yamagata beauty and one-of-a-kind Yamagata experiences.

This was a great talk with @thehiddenjapan Derek Yamashita – he is doing such great work in the Yamagata area- it takes a while to get there, so plan to stay a while to really have amazing experiences and have lots of great chances to interact with locals.
Thank you so much for the wonderful interview!!
