Buongiorno from Mount Vesuvius, Europe’s Most Dangerous Volcano ๐ฎ๐น On my last day in Naples, I’ve decided to go on a little adventure and to visit the volcano that destroyed the ancient city of Pompeii. Mount Vesuvius, often referred to as “Vesuvio” in Italian, is one of the most famous and studied volcanoes in the world. It is located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) east of Naples. Vesuvius is best known for the catastrophic eruption in 79 AD that destroyed the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. This eruption ejected a deadly cloud of volcanic gas, stones, and ash to a height of 33 km, spewing molten rock and pulverized pumice at the rate of 1.5 million tons per second, ultimately releasing 100,000 times the thermal energy of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombings. Due to this eruption, Pompeii and Herculaneum were buried under several meters of ash and pumice, preserving them for over a millennium. When rediscovered, the cities offered an unprecedented snapshot of Roman life, frozen at the moment of burial. Anyway maybe that is too much boring information… Just enjoy the video!

๐ฎ๐นThe reconstruction of the largest eruption in the Mediterranean sea https://youtu.be/Df7QYD27w60
The largest eruption in the Mediterranean occurred in Italy, more precisely in Campania, in the current area of Campi Flegrei: think that the eruption was of such dimensions that its ashes have been found in the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the Eastern Mediterranean up to Russia! Thanks to the volcanic material erupted in this event โ known to history as the "Campanian ignimbrite eruption" โ it was possible to build Underground Naples, the incredible network of tunnels and tunnels that winds under the city. But what were the characteristics of the eruption? And why is it still talked about today?
The Campanian ignimbrite eruption took place about 39,000 years ago and consisted of several phases. The first of these was an explosive phreatomagmatic eruption. What does it mean?
To put it simply, it is an eruption produced by the interaction between magma and water: the latter in contact with the magma instantly becomes steam, increasing the pressure and, consequently, the explosivity of the eruption itself.
The second phase, on the other hand, is a Plinian eruption which allowed the formation of an eruptive column between 23 and 38 km in height! The collapse of the column, as often happens in these cases, originated pyroclastic flows (journalitically called "burning clouds") which continued for about 7 hours at a speed of about 792 km/h. As it is easy to imagine, the destructive power of this event was enormous: to have a term of comparison, 67 km3 of material were erupted during the eruption of ignimbrite in Campania, while in the eruption of Pompeii and Herculaneum "only" 6-8 km3.
We must also consider that the thickness of the pyroclastic flows was about 1.5 km while the mountains in the area did not exceed a thousand metres: for this reason the burning cloud managed without problems to overcome some peaks, also spreading towards the Campania hinterland, reaching even 80 km away from Campi Flegrei. An eruption of this type then caused an emptying of the magma chamber which, collapsing, gave life to a depression called "caldera". It is no coincidence that the type of volcano to which the Campi Flegrei belong is known as the "large caldera".
At the end of this colossal eruption about two thirds of Campania found themselves covered by a tuff layer about 100 meters thick, including Naples. To this material must also be added that of a subsequent eruption, that of the "Neapolitan yellow tuff", which took place about 15 thousand years ago always in the same area and always relating to the Campi Flegrei. All this material made it possible in later times to extract it to make building materials, tunnels, aqueducts and shelters: in short, it allowed the birth of what is now called Underground Naples!
