In this narrative documentary, we focus on the city of Rikuzentakata, which was badly damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011. A direct witness to the event, who survived the devastating wave and told us his story, worked with us on making this video. This video is dedicated to the memory of this event and we cling to the hope with what energy and determination the reconstruction of the city continues. The video is of a purely educational nature and therefore you will not find purposeful shots of destruction in it. Thank you for watching like and subscribing.

  1. 1:41. Japan has land mass under sea. Why so many people not head to wisdom and flea no exscuse. To keep those children in the school area and notsend bus to hill as pre requisite of school policy is. Murder. And what happen with people on the public transportation? Where they able to get to saftey? All public system via metro rail. Should have been paused. And reversed to nearest highest ground. The warning was long enough for more to survive
It is hard to understand why so many did not survive
Except for the man who owned sorba noodle. He pleaded with people to run for hill. He died for many. A truely selfless man. Honorable. His wife loved him dearly. The bickering is typical after many many years of marriage. As a kid. Watching my elders in long long marriage
The arguing was cute. It was the love for each other that kep them together. And in their cotton top days. They stopped fighting and could not be seperated. I feel for this lady. I pray her grand children keep her healthy and amused and never stop showing their love for grand ma.

  2. I've been obsessed by videos of the 2011 tsunami but hadn't seen any videos showing this much context. I'm pleased I stumbled upon yourself as this is everything I've been looking for in order to understand more about tsunamis. Keep up the good work 👏

  3. How the people of these Japanese towns can ever close their eyes and not see this event before them…I cannot imagine how they felt and still feel. 💔
Thank you for your videos, they are informative and show the true tragedy of this event w/o being patronizing or overly dramatic. 💛 Japan💛✌

  4. “Hell on earth” is indeed an appropriate descriptor. I don’t know how I would handle loosing my entire world, friends and family so quickly. I so admire the resilience and courage of the Japanese ppl who survived this incomprehensible tragedy.

  7. Thank you for the update, it has been difficult to know that a wave that size took place, however, I have been seeing more on the history and am glad the rebuilding has been taken place.
Some things mark our life forever, 9-11 and The Tsunami, have changed me, and am almost glad that my parents had already passed away and did not see it, it would of been too much.
I see the sea wall is an excellent idea.

  8. We talk about how slowly the earth changes, calling it “geological time.” Japan doesn’t live in geological time! It takes one afternoon for those islands to move around, rise up or lower!

  9. Thankyou for this informative video. Love, peace and joy to the Japanese people.

  10. Once again, people decide it would be a great idea to build a city not only on the shores of the ocean in an earthquake-prone area, but to build it in a flood plain with no natural defenses against a tsunami. The loss of life and destruction is horrendous of course, but so is the stupidity and arrogance that lead human beings to build homes where they are in grave danger at all times. I don't even pretend to understand it. If you are a port city, then have the port at sea level, doesn't mean the community has to be built down there.

  11. Now all we need to invent is a way to harness all the energy in a tsunami, and instead of it destroying us, it powers us. I am sure it is possible, hydroelectric dams are possible, they use nothing other than water and turbines to generate power. Imagine if we could find a way to absorb all the energy in a tsunami, and turn it into electricity instead?

  12. Today marks 11 years since the quake and tsunami. I think about it every year. Ever since covid hit I've been wanting to go to a memorial on the date but can't get into the country. I sincerely hope next year will be the year. Every year I plant a bonsai to all those affected. I urge you to do something similar. Buy a bottle of Sake. Buy a bonsai. Learn a Japanese phrase. Anything to honor such a horrible tragedy to some of the nicest people on the planet.

  13. Can you imagine if Japan was replaced with Haiti?.. They'd still be recovering from The Atomic bombs. The Japanese are the most resilient people on Earth facing so many destructions and never complaining about it. Haiti is the complete opposite.

  14. Some of the most touching stories I've heard have come from this tragedy. My heart goes out to all of them.

  15. if My whole town was washed away and they wanted to rebuild, knowing that there was ocean level rise of 130 feet in some places during that tsunami, it would only make sense to build the city again where the closest building to the ocean would have to be a "minimum" of 200 feet above the current ocean level???

  16. The best coverage. I'd watch your videos even if the topic was dog poop 😀😀😀
    Seriously. Your the best 👍☮️

  17. I have seen a video of this area. You can measure the rise and fall of the ocean by the line of sea stacks out in the ocean …

    🥺😱😭💔

  18. These people is enough prepared and they suffered this tragedy I could imagine this countries isn't prepared for this event like thailandia in 2004

  19. Looking at the Topography of that bay. The water displacement & wave height (once the Tsunami was within the bay) must have been incomprehensible!
With no where left or right for that water too go…. All force would have been directed straight at the city!
Looking at the scale of the damage, You just know many souls left us that sad, sad day! 😞❤️

  20. A sad start to a new beginning but having studied such things life will return to this devastated area slowly and thoughtfully however one thing does concern me greatly about the whole thing of building high walls to protect the city once again for like the situation that arose with the fitting of seat belts into cars years ago these same walls were the very reason so many people died here. not all I know but a significant percentage will have been lulled into a false sense of security by the original walls so remained in their homes only to find when it really mattered they were of little use at all and no matter how high those walls have now been built of the land raised the people are in danger of eventually falling into the same trap with officials and experts saying well the Tsunami was so high so we will now build walls that are at least that high and add more then you will be safe. That is until the time when they are not safe at all and the waters again flow over the top. Is there a solution to this problem? Education, provision of escape routes, and frequent mandatory evacuation exercises that reinforce in the minds of the people that while walls exist they should not trust them at all, a true mind state in all to hope for the best but actively plan for the worst case every single time.
