The Hermitage is one of the world’s largest art and cultural-historical museums in St. Petersburg, Russia. The associated complex of buildings, in addition to the Winter Palace, also includes the Small Hermitage, the Large (Old) Hermitage, the New Hermitage, and the Hermitage Theater. From its completion in 1762 until 1904, it was used as the official winter residence of Russian emperors. In 1904, Nicholas II moved the permanent residence to the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo.
