Northern Chiba’s four cities of Sawara, Sakura, Choshi and Narita were designated a Japan Heritage site, under the title “An Edo Travelogue through Four Hokuso Cities — Reliving Edo in Hokuso’s Historical Districts”. During the Edo period (1603-1867), Sawara flourished with its water transportation business.
