Japan Beach Clean-Up – Volunteering in Hiroshima #plasticfreejuly #trashtag #oceanplastic

It’s Plastic-Free July which is another great reason to pick up trash from the beaches and waterways to stop them getting out to sea, endangering marine life, becoming microplastics, and causing other kinds of environmental and social problems. I’ll be cleaning up along the coastline near Hiroshima’s port which sometimes collects a lot of styrofoam, plastic tubing and plastic discs from our local oyster industry (sign the petition below to encourage a shift back to bamboo). The area also has some special trees and birds that I hope to show you before we start the cleanup. The views of the boats going by and the Japan sea and the islands beyond are also so beautiful and amazing- hope you can join me!

STOP USING PLASTIC IN OYSTER PRODUCTION petition to ask the Japan + Hiroshima government officials to stop using plastic in the oyster industry & shift back to bamboo, wood and biodegradable materials like they used traditionally (until 50 years ago)

My aim is to collect signatures and raise awareness to encourage Hiroshima and Japan’s government to take Japan contribution to the ocean plastic problem more seriously. @theoceancleanup found that Japan is the biggest contributor of ocean plastic pollution that they collected in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. == Japan is the biggest contributor at 34% ==

Oysters are good for the health of the ocean in how they grow and clean the water, they also have a big impact on employment and the economy. But in Hiroshima, the biggest plastic pollution problem in our oceans and inland see is the oyster industry- this has been true for the last 20 years and is getting worse each year.
