The Tenjin Matsuri festival in Osaka, Japan, is an ancient and vibrant celebration honoring Tenman Tenjin, the Shinto deity of learning and arts. Held annually on July 24th and 25th, the festival features captivating boat processions along the Okawa River, adorned with lanterns and decorations.
Osaka Tenmangu Shrine was founded in 949 during the late Heian Period and is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane. Tenjin Matsuri is the major festival of Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, and is a summer festival to pray for the banishment of plague and disease, good health, and peace in the city. It has a history of more than 1,000 years and has been widely known as one of the three major festivals in Japan since the middle of the Edo period (1603-1868). More than one million people visit the festival over two days.
