Just a short train ride away from Kyoto station is the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Fushimi Inari is known for its over 10,000 Torii gates. It’s a must-see site if you’re visiting Japan.

Be prepared for a hike, though! Fushimi Inari is located on a tall hill, which means you’ll be going up and down uneven outdoor stairs the entire way (surrounded by Torii gates the entire way, which is surreal). Everyone from very old to very young visits Fushimi Inari, so you’ll likely be fine if you can climb stairs at all, so this is just a word to the wise for what’s up ahead. Bring water!

Scattered throughout the climb up and down Fushimi Inari are shops and restaurants that have a very authentic look and feel.

Fushimi Inari is right across the street from Inari station, which is a JR Rail station, so you can get there using your JR Rail Pass.
