Embark on a journey with me as we hike to the lush green peaks of Mt. Meshimori and Mt. Omori in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.

Our adventure begins at the Shishi-Iwa, also known as “Lion Rock” (獅子岩), located adjacent to the free Shishi-Iwa Parking Lot (獅子岩駐車場・Shishi-iwa chushajo) where convenient public restrooms are available.

We then cross the street from the parking lot and find ourselves at the trailhead of Mt. Meshimori (飯盛山登山口・Meshimori-yama tozan-guchi). As we ascend, the rolling clouds across the highland plateau create a surreal landscape, offering respite from the summer heat.

Reaching the summit of Mt. Meshimori, we would typically be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the Yatsugatake Mountain Range and the majestic Mt. Fuji standing proudly in all its splendor. While sunny skies were initially forecasted for our hike, it’s important to note that weather conditions at higher altitudes can be unpredictable, especially during the rainy season. Therefore, it’s essential to be prepared for sudden weather changes and stay vigilant throughout the ascent.

Our journey continues as we traverse the Jumonji-Toge Pass and make our way to the peak of Mt. Omori (大盛山・Omori-yama). The southern slope of this peak is renowned for its vibrant native species, such as Amur daylilies, purple plume thistles, and bistort, which burst into full bloom during the rainy season.

Finally, we descend back to the parking lot, concluding our 3-hour exploration of the two mountain peaks.
