ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
D: Today, I want to show you some videos of Sumpu Castle Park.
M: Wonderful!
D: Actually, just a year ago, I visited Shizuoka City for a business meeting. Afterward, I had some spare time, so I decided to visit the park.
M: Nice. Since Hamamatsu Castle Park is such a beautiful park, Sumpu Castle Park must be fantastic as well.
D: Yeah, it really is.

D: Sumpu Castle Park was actually the residence of the powerful Tokugawa clan during the Edo period. The original Sumpu Castle was built in the late 16th century by Tokugawa Ieyasu.
M: Oh, if I remember correctly, he used to live in Hamamatsu Castle, right?
D: You’re absolutely correct.
It is said that he lived in Sumpu 3 different times.
First of all, he spent his childhood, from the age of 8 to 19, in this area as a hostage. Then, at the age of 45, he moved there from Hamamatsu Castle. And lastly, he moved to this area at the age of 65 and lived here for 10 years until he died.
M: I see, so it’s a place closely associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu.
D: That’s right.

D: Sumpu Castle no longer has a central tower. I heard that the current reconstruction of Sumpu Castle focuses on various historical landmarks and structures within the park, rather than a full-scale restoration of the castle complex.
M: But it’s still a beautiful park.
D: Yes, it is. It’s pretty huge. Take a look at this map. It features various attractions and historical landmarks.
M: Wow, it looks really vast and interesting.

D: That’s a statue of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
M: He looks very dignified.

D: Look at the sign. That was my favorite spot in the park.
M: Momijiyama Garden?
D: Yes. The park itself is free, but there’s an entrance fee for this garden.
M: Really? Then it must be nice and well-maintained.
D: It’s only 150 yen for adults, so it’s definitely worth the entry fee. You’ll see a lot of beautiful nature in there.

M: Wow, what beautiful flowers.
D: Right!? There’s a nice resting area by the pond.
M: It looks really soothing. I really want to go there too.

D: Also, there was a tea room, so I took a little rest.
M: What a beautiful tea room. It must be nice to stay in such a place surrounded by greenery, with a cup of matcha tea and a quaint confectionery.
D: Yeah, I was able to have a relaxing time.

M: I can hear the sound of water falling.
D: Great guess. There were waterfalls at the end of this path.
M: Oh, there they are. I love that sound.

D: I really enjoyed this garden.
M: Yes, it was beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

D: Also, there are some historical landmarks.

東御門(ひがしごもん)
The restoration of this gate area was completed in 1996 using traditional Japanese carpentry techniques. It was a strategic gate with gun slits where defenders could drop stones on attackers, and archers could fire on attackers in a narrow space.

巽櫓(たつみやぐら)
It was restored in 1989. It has a unique L-shaped layout, which is very rare in Japan. It played a crucial role in the defense of Sumpu Castle.

坤櫓(ひつじさるやぐら)
It was destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1854 and reconstructed 160 years later using traditional woodworking techniques.

D: The interiors of those buildings have been turned into museums where you can learn about the history of Sunpu Castle Park.
M: Great.

D: And then, I got a little hungry, so I had Oden at this shop.
M: Oh, ya, I know that Shizuoka City is famous for its Oden.
D: And I enjoyed my lunch in an outdoor seating area surrounded by nature.
M: That sounds lovely.

D: By the way, we’ve been to a lot of restaurants in Hamamatsu City over the past year.
M: Ya, I’ve truly enjoyed all the experiences we’ve had so far.
D: We often find ourselves returning to some of our favorite restaurants, so how about we reminisce about our visits to those places next time?
M: That sounds like a lot of fun!
