In this Indonesia Travel Vlog, we explore Surabaya – the 2nd biggest city in Indonesia (behind Jakarta). We start our day at the submarine monument (Monumen kapal selam or ‘monkasel’) which actually happens to be the biggest submarine monument in all of Asia! The submarine was a present from the Soviet Union. It was used by the Indonesian navy from 1962-1989 and was very important in Indonesia’s fight for independence. The submarine is now a monument that you can walk around inside and see just how small the inside is! We learned about the meaning of Surabaya and that the crocodile and shark fighting is the symbol of the city. We then started seeing pictures of crocodiles and sharks all over!! We walked through a nice skatepark and so many gardens (we had no idea Surabaya is so green!!!) to arrive at the famous Chinese mosque – Muhammad Cheng Hoo Mosque. We’d never seen a Chinese mosque before so the building was really interesting to us! Unfortunately there was some event going on that day so we didn’t enter the mosque, but it was still nice to see from the outside. We continued walking and found some other really nice Chinese temples around the city, as well as some nice colonial architecture. We then went to the Heroes Monument (Tugu Pahlawan) which is shaped like an upside down nail and reminded us of the Monas building in Jakarta! The monument was built to remember the 1945 Battle of Surabaya. Outside of the park we saw one of the trolleys that is supposed to give free tours of Surabaya! From there we continued walking to the Kota Tua old town. We were surprised that the Kota Tua area of Surabaya seemed to have a lot more Chinese influence than the Kota Tua in Jakarta! Next we stopped for some lunch at a Lontong Balap restaurant….we went in and asked for a menu to which they replied ‘no’! It turns out that they only serve one dish – Lontong Balap – which originated in Surabaya. It was so good!! It’s now one of our new favorite Indonesian foods! From there we went to the House of Sampoerna which is a Dutch colonial style tobacco museum. It’s supposed to be one of the most famous tourist destinations in Surabaya…..however it was closed! We decided to go back to our hotel and work as we couldn’t check out the famous museum.

  1. Amazing video.. Please try spicy little first..you pur chilly little in corner already good step..As Indonesian..i feel surabaya is spicier food.. Enjoy your adventure.. Mantap/very good

Kel Sampoerna was used to be the richest person in Indonesia because beliau membangun bisnis rokok terbesar di dunia setelah perusahaan USA. Ingin melihat video kalian tentang Surabaya – ingin tahu lebih banyak lagi tentang Jawa Timur dari video kalian. Terima kasih Semoga bisa ke Bromo dan mistical Gunung Kawi. Welcome to Surabayo…

  3. You guys should try to eat Rawon (black beef soup) and Rujak Cingur (spicy salad with cow's nose), both are also iconic Surabaya delicacies as well.

    Thanks for visiting my hometown!

  4. Yours eyes so beautiful like barbie and so Blue

  5. If you still in Surabaya you can try to visit:
    – surabaya north quay. It's good for sunset time
    – kwan in goddess statue in kenjeran park
    – House of Sampoerna when it's open ๐Ÿ˜
    – boat in kalimas river in the night
    – various kinds of surabaya's street food at Lapangan Brawijaya (Kodam). It's a night market
    – Surabaya Zoo. I don't recommend this but maybe you wanna try

  6. I don't mean to be "julid", but please …. Use your left hand to hold camera & use your right hand to pass someting to someone. Many foreigner forget about this manner but it means a lot for us if you hand me something with your right hand. โ˜บ๏ธ

  7. If you want to see another Old City like Batavia you have to visit to Semarang city (north coast of Java island between Jakarta and Surabaya city)

  8. Kota Tua= Old Town (The city built by the Dutch)

Pecinan Cina=China Town (The environment is dominated by Chinese)

  9. you look so fresh an beautiful Natalie! and i'm glad to see charles again๐Ÿ˜…, so you had been in East Java, Surabaya is hot but amazing city, hope you both enjoy your days.

  10. Welcome to surabaya!
Fun fact, in the national monument park, the place is also a mass grave for Surabaya residents who died in the war, we remember it as Heroes' Day which falls on November 10, that's why Surabaya is also known as the city of heroes. And at the bottom there are also museums.
And yes, we have a lot park/garden here โค

  11. You should try indonesian torpedo..peace,full of love, n yummy..usually u can found in reston/waroeng that selling satay

  12. 15:11 Btw if u want enjoy more of your food but with less spicy, u can add some sweet soy sauce because in every restaurant in Indonesia they have it. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  13. Hi Natalie Charles. Every city in Indonesia has an "OLD KOTA" which is a designation for areas that still have ancient buildings. Colonial heritage buildings that are still being cared for by the community Around. For example Semarang, Jakarta, Jogja, Surabaya, etc. they still have classic colonial buildings. Which in the past was used as a trading center, office of officials, etc

  14. I like your reactions when it's spiciness, you can still laugh haha. Usually people with spiciness want to be angry haha. I have a tip before you mix chili sauce on your plate and food, try it first Drop a small amount in your hand or on a spoon. Then taste. If it feels spicy, don't take much for your plate. Nice trick wkwk

  15. I hope you feel at home in Indonesia, there are still many tourist destinations in Indonesia that are worldwide, such as Bali, Lombok, Labuan Bajo, Komodo Island, Raja Ampat, Borobudur, Prambanan and many more

  16. Please try tahu campur, rawon, nasi pecel, bebek goreng, soto ayam, and soto daging Madura. These are popular East Java cuisines.
