Japan Travel: Historic Western Architecture at the Mikawa Hotel in Karuizawa, Nagano 51 Moopon

Kyu-Karuizawa (旧軽井沢), located in Nagano Prefecture is the center for the Karuizawa resort area. Blessed with abundance for nature, visitors come to the town to escape the noise and discomfort of daily city life. Visitors can experience nature infused activities such as hiking, skiing, cycling here as well as city sleek cafés and restaurants in Karuizawa. With both an outlet mall, Prince Shopping Plaza as well as the Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza, shoppers can enjoy this multi-faceted town.

And for history lovers, they will enjoy visiting the Former Mikasa Hotel, one of the first Western style hotels in Japan. Called the “Rokumeikan in Karuizawa” this wooden architectural building was constructed in 1904. The hotel had 30 guest rooms with décor and furnishings which was considered quite luxurious. Now a National Important Cultural Property, the former Mikawa Hotel is considered a museum. Visitors are allowed to enter the premises for a small fee.

Foodies may be interested in trying the Mikasa Hotel Curry Rice. Though not available at the Former Mikawa Hotel, there are restaurants in Kyu-Karuizawa that serve this gorgeous dish from the past. The price may be a little higher the a normal bowl of curry as this curry is based on the luxurious Mikawa Hotel.
