[Information]
This arboretum is located at 343 Hwaam-ro, Dalseo-gu, Daegu. It was the first place in the country to turn a landfill into an arboretum, and it was created over a six-year period from 1996 to 2002.
Originally, from December 1986 to April 1990, 4.1 million tons of household waste from Daegu citizens were buried in the current location, and it had been left unattended for a long period of time for nearly 10 years. So Daegu city planned to create the nation’s first eco-friendly ecological park.
First stage during 1996 to 1997, the site was covered to an average height of 6 to 7 meters using residual soil generated from various construction projects, such as the construction of Daegu Metro Line 1. Second stage, an arboretum was created over five years from 1997 to 2002, and opened in May 2002.
The total floor area is 244,630㎡, and there are flower garden, medicinal herb garden, wild flower garden, coniferous tree garden, wetland garden, aquatic botanical garden, medicinal botanical garden, rose of Sharon garden, fruit tree garden, dye plant garden, azalea garden, aromatic plant garden, strange stone garden, bamboo forest garden, ecological transition observation garden, and lawn.
There is a specialized arboretum decorated with a total of 21 themes. A total of 350,000 plants of 1,750 species are displayed, including 270,000 plants of 1,300 types of herbaceous plants and 80,000 plants of 450 types of woody plants.
In addition, there is a forest culture exhibition hall that opened as a nature learning center for citizens. The first floor of the exhibition hall consists of the visitor center, and exhibition hall, and an experience learning room. The second floor consists of and exhibition hall and planning exhibition hall.
It is clean, well-maintained, scenic, well-equipped, and very well-organized for leisure and relaxation. There are many people who come to exercise or take a walk in the nearby apartment complex, but it is important to note that you cannot ride a bicycle or skate inside, or bring pets.
Daegu City is currently working on a plan to expand the current Daegu Arboretum to three times its current size. According to the plan, the concept of the first stage expansion project is a medicinal plant garden, and the concept of the second stage expansion project is a forest cultural play space.
As a result of purchasing the surrounding forest in 2019 as planned above, the site was expanded to 780,000㎡, and then a wood culture experience center and a theme forest path were added, and the medicinal plant garden was expanded and relocated.
It is famous as a promenade for Daegu citizens, and the 4km-long trail is especially popular. Also, in 2021, there is a barefoot walk ocher dirt road, so many people are looking for it through word of mouth.
