In this video, we will show the effects of the tsunami on the small village of Okawa near Ishinomaki, which lies in a picturesque valley at the mouth of the Kitakami River into the Pacific Ocean. We will show you the events of that time from the perspectives of two friends, Akemi and Yoshio, who were divided by this event. The video uses exclusively illustrative shots to illustrate the story and events of the time, and the content has an exclusively academic and educational purpose. Thanks for watching the video.

  4. Thank you for educating me about that particular disaster that awful day ,for the whole of wonderful ,,Japan.

  5. Que tristeza foi essa destruição, quantas vidas perdidas, e mesmo assim Japão deu uma aula com sua força, perseverança e resiliência frente aos problemas desse dia terrível e inesquecível pro mundo.

  6. I watch these videos compulsively. They all take my breath away feel somehow more shocking than anything i have seen before and i feel, after watching this one, like I have been using them as a mental stimulant, in a way, getting high off them. The story you told with such empathy and feeling, took me to a completely different place, and brought rare tears to my eyes. thank you

  7. Just visited the site today and was wondering why they didn't run up the hill behind their school – your video explains that (also why there are memorial plaques and stones erected on the junction by the bridge). Thank you.

  8. Per tutti coloro che hanno perso qualcuno che amavano……sono affianco a Voi nel dolore e nella ricrescita!!!

  9. I don’t understand if you had hills that steep why there would not be a path and the default safe location well above the school in case of an earthquake, why wouldn’t the manual suggest that in any earthquake the default action would be to go into the hills until cleared by a governing body?

  10. Please, please, keep telling these people's stories!! I knew there were probably a thousand stories, but I don't speak Japanese so I couldn't watch the few I found. I love the way you put the videos together with past and present footage, I am sure it is a lot of work and I really do appreciate it.

  11. Preffering bad accent of human before computer generated voice giving this sad story stupidly dramatic and unaware aftertaste. It´s about real humans tragedy not some random bedstory. Undignified and insulting!

  12. Is the word "tendenko"? What is the word the Japanese use for – do not go home – when earthquake comes – run to higher ground. Heartbreaking. I am so very sorry.

  13. This breaks my heart.. Friends, in the face of a disaster, think for yourselves if what people of authority are sating, makes no sense to you RUN! AS FAST AS YOU CAN in order to save your life! God bless the Japanese people!

  14. Compliments on the excellent writing and narration. This event is truly the most heartbreaking of all of those that day. The obedience and respect for elders instilled in Japanese children left them at the mercy of the adults decisions, as reckless as they were. This is too much to bear. Words just can't convey my sympathy enough.

  15. Terrible, if they had only gone to the hills right behind the school all would have survived.

  16. Beautiful narration of a very very sad story and you read it perfectly to the public like a book❤ RIP all innocent children

  17. As a novice engineer, I believe a submarine wall located a 1/4 mile off shore could have undermined the power of those Tsunami waves. So sorry for the loss of lives.
