Favorite? Riesling, perhaps from the Pfalz, perhaps from a good Finger Lakes producer. Thanks!!
Furmint
15 Minutes in I was thinking. What?! No Riesling and yes sir you are correct it is objectively the best grape variety in the world.
Pinot means small? I thought Pinot meant pinecone, because the grape bunch looked like one?😮
Great video, I am a native French speaker and work in a wine store in the US. If I pronounce Chenin the French way nobody can understand me so I always have to anglicize it. Alas, the nature of language is to convey meaning. Great video, I love dry Albana from Emilia Romagna in the summer.
I messed up in the video saying “Pinot” means “small” when translated to English. My bad on the brain fart!!!
I love red wine in the summer. It actually drinks at a good temperature. In winter i find red wines generally drink too cold in the uk and you lose all the aromatics
The last wine I took to a summer bbq was the Van Volxem GG Bockstein 2016. It comes from Saar and has brilliant mineral and herbaceous notes but it´s pushed by enough fruit to please most people. The slight residual sugars though made it an utter delight with spicy chicken or salty pork sausages. A good alternative would also be the A Christmann Gimmelsdingen 2017 from the Pfalz especially if there´s seafood on the BBQ.
Away from Riesling my top bbq wines are:
Quinta de Baixa, Bairrada (especially for meatier bbq dishes like frango piri)
Vinatigo Ancestrales, Tenerife (grilled octopus or meaty fish like tuna or swordfish with chilli and lime)
Smous, Saouvignon Blanc, Stellenbosch, SA (for vegetarians.) It´s a dream with grilled vegetables or grilled halloumi
Perfect summer sundowners:
Remoissenet Pere et Fils, Bourgogne Aligote
Quarz, Priorat
Rieger, Baden, Grauburgunder
Anyway have a great summer of drinking – it´s going to be magical!
You freaking geek. Riesling – YEAH, it's nice. I like all that kind of stuff. Wine is personal though and I can say the same about any region. I'm fairly sure if you or 95% of the wine world gave me a generic answer about sherry I'd think 'Oh God, here we go.' No criticism and love the video. (I love Alsace and German stuff too.) A gazillion fun wines for summer including said sherry. ❤
matthew, would be great to see you more out and about? When's your next adventure?
I was looking for Italian varietals and was bummed until 10:52. Looking forward to the Italian whites video!
Do you like Alsatian Reisling? You didn't mention it, personally I like it as much as German Riesling, especially the Grand Cru wines which can be an amazing value!
I still want my big reds all year long
Love the less expensive options!
I think there are a couple more «monopoles» appellations apart of Romané-Conti, Coulée de Serrant and Château Grillet. La Tâche, Clos de Tart, La Grande Rue and La Romanée seems to have a sole owner. There are all in Burgundy.
First off you know Antonis…small world. I recently opened a 2013 Mandilari from Dourakis and it was super interesting. They also make a very cool dessert wine of an indigenous grape called Romeiko. Also a sparkling wine that i have yet to try. Regarding Vidiano, I would recommend tasting an un-oaked version to see what the variety has to offer. Imo great food white that is typically an excellent pairing to Cretan cuisine
I am in Germany atm and I had a great Baden Grauburgunder Orts Wein with dinner. I did try the Douloufakis Amphora Vidiano 2020, 90/91 points though this was at a wine fair.
Posip I think you have to go to Croatia to try. As far as the Mosel is concerned for me their Riesling trockens are too light.
I much prefer the Rheingau, Pfalz and Rheinhessen. Nahe can be great too; Finger Lakes, Eden and Clare and basically everywhere in Austria makes great Riesling.
Such a pain hearing how much you guys need to pay in the US for some of those great German Rieslings 🙁
For summer i like to drink cava , from italy – Soave, Creco di Tufo and now i find a grape variety Insoglia (crispy and mineral) from Sicily, Portugal Alvarinho, from Austria Roter and Gruner Veltliner and from Slovakia – Welshriesling and Blaufrankisch. German Riesling – Rheingau, Nahe :-). Cheers
Any suggestions on what white wine would pair perfectly with mexican grilled food. We typically grill beef, pork, and sausage with sides being beans and red rice. And of course one or two spicy sauses. I find hard to find a good wine to pair plus im also a beginner in this.
Your ode to Riesling at the end made me miss the days when I discovered your channel and every other video was about Riesling (small exaggeration). I agree with every word even if I probably would say Mosel is my favourite region haha. But I still haven't tried enough Nahe, Rheinhessen, Pfalz, etc etc. Even in Mosel I still have 10+ producers on my to try list. There is just so much! And then all the small producers… Recently I ordered six bottles from Hirschhof, who has vines in both Morstein and Kirschspiel in Rheinhessen. Compared to, e.g. Wittmann their price is around 25% for the Morstein dry wines, 12,50€. Would be a GG if they were in VDP… And the Morstein Kabinett at 9€ was delicious. Such insane value.
Great selection you got there 😉
Just discovered the Torrentes grape of Argentina, floral and refreshing. Give it a go. Cheers!
Dr. Matthew. My Doctor does not like wine. I'm a Lawyer and have over ruled her decision….
