  1. We stayed in asakusa nice and peaceful at night, you got right that train rides where long but that made us plan ahed what we did on the day to make sure we did what we needed to do and see and staying close to a train or metro exist station makes a world of difference it might be a couple extra $$ but walking out the train exit and be at your hotel in less than 5 minutes is so awesome, thanks for this awesome video update and great ideas where to stay

  2. We see a lot of posts about where to stay and what to do as adults but what about those of us coming with kids? We are looking to stay by Ueno and looking at getting the greater Tokyo pass. We don't plan to travel out of Tokyos main area. Suggestions for a family of 5 with two 7yr olds and a 14yr old? How about a review of the greater Tokyo Pass?

  3. Just went tokyo and stayed near ikebukuro station. its a great base most of the attractions and shopping district. the stop itself is a great shopping area. if you like the streets there are plenty of streets with interersting shops. if you like malls its a walking distnace to sunshine city which has great shopping and and aquarium. a great place to stay.

  4. Hi harb, i completely agree with your ratings, even for Yokohama which i had not considered as a place to stay.
Shinjuku is definitely THE place to stay in Tokyo for all the reasons you mentioned.
Pity the hotel rates are pretty expensive, almost as expensive as Shibuya's. It was only because of the higher hotel prices that I chose #2 choice over #1. I have stayed at Tokyo station in my last 3 trips to Japan so i have gotten used to Tokyo area especially Shintomicho and Kanda areas hahaha.

  5. I stayed in Akihabara and it was great. 20 minutes from Shinjuku, 35 minutes from Shibuya, 5 minutes from Ueno and right on the Yamanote line. It was cheap too.

  6. I stayed in Keio Plaza Hotel on my first visit but after that I stayed in all budget places and stayed well away from Shinjuku, I wanted to try different areas and always went for the lowest price once I discovered that everywhere was clean and good service , definitely people should try Yokohama ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ‘

  7. most of these recommendations involve leaving Tokyo, so why stay in tokyo?

  8. WE stayed at Kanda area (near JR Kanda), it is very near Ueno, Asakusa, Akihabara!

we got our room for $27/night / person (we are 2) so I'd say cheap considering we are near a station (few blocks away or less than 5 min walk)

  9. I wholeheartedly agree with your #1. Shinjuku is the only place that we stay in Tokyo. In addition to being a major transportation hub, Shinjuku has all the shopping, restaurants, and entertainment you could want. The east side is bustling and great for nightlife, and the west and south sides are more quiet and relaxed. We really like Takashimaya (especially) and Isetan with their depachikas and numerous restaurants on the upper floors. Venturing out of Shinjuku to visit different places during the day is fun, but the best part is that you always return to Shinjuku.

  10. Lots of great tips in this vid. Nice work. And you're 100% right about Yokohama, although i would choose the Sakuragicho or Kannai areas over Yokohama station.

  11. Shinjuku is very rundown and extremely busy, don't stay there unless you're really into nightlife. Asakusa is a very nice area, with cheap accomodation and plenty of tourist attractions around. The stretch between Shimbashi and Yurakucho is great in terms of good hotels and plenty of shops and restaurants. You also have the Yamamote Line at your doorstep, and will be only minutes away from Tokyo Station, Akihabara, etc. Ueno, meh, it's not the nicest place in Tokyo and a bit detached from the central areas. I enjoy staying in Odabia, although hotel options are a bit limited (Grand Nikko is my favourite). You spend the day in Tokyo, enjoying the hustle and bustle, and retreat to this "resort-style" man-made island in the evening with great views of central Tokyo. Odaiba also offers 3 major shopping malls with plenty of restaurants and even a nice little beach.

  12. Budget & hostels: Ueno + asakusa (+nearby areas east & north )

    Luxury: Ginza + Tokyo station

Families: Yokohama + (Maihama near Disneyland)

Short Tokyo stay: Shinjuku + Shibuya to see it all quick. (easy access to Fuji, Nikko and other cities)

  13. We will visit Tokyo in August and will be staying in Chiyoda. Since Chiyoda has not been mentioned at all I hope this will still turn out to be a good idea…

  14. Thanks for this great video. I totally agree with you, Shinjuku is the best place for me to stay in Tokyo. I am not a nightlife person, but I enjoy the vibe, the many restaurants and bars, shops, conbinis and the great acess to public transport (mostly train and subway, but also bus, with the Express Bus Terminal). Also, so many attractions are reachable without having to travel for ages. I usually stay in Nishi Shinjuku, because its quiet, but just a 10 minutes walk away from the action and from Shinjuku station. The last time I was in Tokyo, I also stayed in Kabuchiko, on the border to Korea town, and that was also great (I love Korean food, and I dont find the red light discrict unsafe (as a woman)).

  15. Iโ€™m staying right near Akihabara station. It seemed like itโ€™s a pretty solid middle option to easily access Shinjuku, Shibuya and Asakusa is close as well. Anyone stayed around there before that liked it/disliked it?

  16. Your travel tips always come in handy, and I love incorporating them into my own trips! By the way, have you had a chance to explore the new V4 of the Bento Bag from Nomad Lane? I think it could be a game-changer when it comes to staying organized on your travels.

  17. Thanks for placing the Yokohama station as the third in the list. I agree your comments as a local in Yokohama. The station could be good choice to visitors who have traveled several times to Tokyo. In fact some of my overseas friends choose Yokohama (or Sakuragi-cho) rather than Tokyo.
