Japan’s dangerous side is not something you hear a lot about. Sure, you hear about Yakuza and earthquakes, but you’re also told Japan is the safest county on earth. Well, there was an easy way to test that. I was in Tokyo, the world’s largest megacity, and decided to check out Sanya, the most notorious neighborhood in the city. The different parts like Minowa and Yoshiwara were known for all kinds of nefarious activity.
How would it be for an American who just wanders in? Well, I wasn’t quite expecting this..

Always a fun time in Japan
Ueno is not sketchy.
Hello good video greetings from Brazil 👍
Thank you for taking your time filming these rarely seen locations.
You can buy weed in that neighborhood 😊
Good stuff. It's all about respect. Don't have that in America. Although I have to say, the bike scene reminded me of going to ski resorts and not having to worry about someone stealing your skis/snowboard.
I was stationed in Japan a decade ago and the worst encounters I’ve experienced were the yakuza in Shinjuku. Don’t ever fall for their pleas to have “drinks with beautiful Japanese girls”. It’s a trap!
Overall, extremely safe and fun country 💯
Ueno Zoo is awesome.
It's a deep area,isn't it?
I miss my working days traveling to Tokyo/Nagoya on business. One trip in the mid ‘90’s we stayed at the Imperial in Tokyo and as we arrived back after dinner, a couple of cars pulled up to the entrance and several men and women exited and went into the hotel. They walked fairly casually through the lobby with a number of photographers following them. I asked a member of the hotel staff who it was…President Suharto of Indonesia! I couldn’t help but think of the level of security that would have been present in Washington, DC. It might be a bit different now in 2023, but Japan is still awe inspiring. (Just make sure you do it on an expense account 😜)
There are more black people in America than Japan, that is why the crime is higher. Just look at the statistics of crime and violence in black neighborhoods and areas.
There's no black people in Japan.
I feel like they didn’t let you sit down at the chicken place simply because you are a foreigner 🤔 I heard thats a thing.
This is too funny 😂 😢 much love and enjoyed the video
I wish I could be still in Tokyo to meet you.
I left in March and I need to wait until January to apply for the visa again.
It would be nice to have a walk with you man.
you know exactly why japan is a peaceful place compared to the cities you named. deep inside we all know
Super fantastic content as usual ❤
Every place has its dark side
How or what platform did you use to learn to speak Japanese? to crunch up on learning on it in a month, seeing you and hearing you talk to the locals as you also get praise from them for speaking good Japanese, I am very intrigued.
I'm glad I came across your videos. Really really straightforward content and informative.
I went to uni around this area, and we hang out late at night, but never encountered anything dangerous! I mean there are a lot of homeless people but they never bother anyone
Looks great i want to go
Mate, you NEED to go to Nishinari! There are some interesting "tea shops" there 😅
Keep making Japan videos, very interesting! Maybe show a smaller town, talk to locals..
No guns, no one starts wars.
The number of crimes in Japan is very low.
Greatings from Tanzania
Why don't you drink a beer with the yakuza guys? Maybe they aren't that bad?
You have changed man. In Africa you didn't care about brothels and dark places.
In Japan you are so careful although you say that their most dangerous places are even safer than in LA or NY..
Entertaining and educational. Thank you Sabbatical Dude.
Do you have a brother named Ari Shaffir?
What is it they do differently? Cmon man. You are smart enough to know. It’s the homogeneous society and lack of foreigners. Especially those from non western and European countries. Japans in-group bias has been its primary source of success and survival for ages. Something is in the west could learn from.
Hey! Yous has a problem with criminal organizations?
Love this video, so down to earth and funny at times
Great
Why can't American cities be as safe as this? Lol. Everyone knows the answer you're just not allowed to say it.
