This video is Part 2 of my amazing day of exploring on the fascinating Greek island of Kythnos. I ended the day at the little seaside village of Loutra, or so I thought. But I’d seen a sign for a castle, which I knew nothing about. So I decided to drive towards it and investigate. It ended up being one of the best hikes and most interesting adventures in my travels. 1. You can watch Part 1 here, in which I show much more of the island of Kythnos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uLnuLFkwrg As far as the history of the castle, which I knew nothing about when I hiked to it, it looks like it is very old, going back to the Byzantine era. Here's a little more information about it:
"The castle was the medieval capital of the island of Kythnos from 7th century AD until the end of the 16th century. Those days it was called "Castle of Thermia". Thermia was the name of Kythnos because of the hot springs in the island that were famous since the Roman era. From 1207 the island and the castle belonged to the Italian family of Gozzadini who were subjects of the Venetian Duchy of Naxos. In 1537 the castle was destroyed by the Turkish pirate Barbarossa. It took some time for the capital to move to Messaria (or Chora). This happened in 1570, while the Venetian era finished in 1613."

  2. You worry too much about the wind. It's never bad in any of your videos when you apologize for it.

I'm halfway through your video. Watching you go where u said you didnt want to at 730pm lol. Always the way isnt it. But at least your on a dry island and probably have a cell phone. Not like your in the deep woods of Oregon no GPS off trail with the sun going down while your looking for foot prints in snow.

I hope your video ends with the best part of hiking. The drive home and the bong rips and dinner. Curious of what dinner on the fly at midnight looks like on a island that small.

  3. I agree with an earlier comment – I think this is my absolute favorite vídeo to date. The scenery is just stunning and at it's best at dusk. Incredibly beautiful. Thanks for your efforts, Gabriel. Kythnos is now high up on my lists of to see islands. Off to GR in August & counting the days until I can live that deep blue sea. It's like nowhere else …. ❤

  5. I'm curious as to where you a world Traveler most the year gets his US political news from? I imagine that's one of the great things about travelling abroad is not to hear the fox vs cnn stuff all day and right vs left. But I imagine you have to keep some sort of track about what is going on at home? Curious where you get your US political news from and also if yoi have ever ran into any banned political media on your phone through your travels. I imagine lots of countries censor their media on the phone networks.

A episode about that would be cool for you to do.

  6. Good morning Gabriel 🌞!! mission the Castle: Accomplished 🏰!! What an Amazing view🌄🌅 !! What an adventure 🌊🐟

  7. Another great explore but now the million dollar question . Have you ever been bitten by a scorpion? As far as I know you can find 10 under each one of theese rocks. When I was a soldier in Mytilene we gathered them in bottles.

  8. wouldn't you be looking at the island of Kea if you are on the north coast of Kythnos? It seems like the Greek mainland wouldn't be that close. Great video!!

  9. The reason the gate to that (castle.church.temple) is becsuse its tradition that you must bow down upon entering

  10. Hi Gabriel have you considered to film with the small drones? I saw some high quality ones at Costco
I love and admire your videos ❤

  11. Great video Gabe. It seems a lot of bad things are happening in and around Greece these days, but still a wonderful place to visit, high on my bucket list.

  12. Love Greece. Not been for 20 years. Now I have youngish children will definatly be on my travel plans for future holiday. Keep up the good work your videos are always within my interest.

  13. Wow, that was incredible. They certainly had a fine knack for making use of the excessive rock abundance. Thanks for the adventure that most of us could not even attempt.🌝🇬🇷
