Hey guys! Today’s video finds me in my former home town, Durban! I went through to the Durban Botanic Gardens for some birding and decided that while I was there I should grab a pie for breakfast. I asked and was recommended 2 bakeries in close proximity to the botanical gardens – The Bread Mill and Continental Bakery.
Both good pies, but the Bread Mill was just so much better even though it’s just 1 point between the two pies. With the Maggies Farm pie under review, the Bread Mill is now the unofficial leader of take your pie and vaai!
The Bread Mill
Price: R39.90 (1.17x Woolies) for a chicken and mushroom pie
Pastry: Golden Pie Crust pastry. Thick but crispy.
Size: Medium pie that just about hits the spot!
Taste: Chicken mushroom flavour was the closest I’ve got to the childhood pie filling I have known since childhood. Seasoned perfectly and the gelatinous gravy was just the right gloopiness. Generous chicken pieces, soft and tender
Verdict: As close to the perfect nostalgia pie as you can get! Thickness on the pie pastry marks it down but with the Maggies farm pie under review, The Bread Mill is now the unofficial leader of best pies I have had in the last 2 years! A well deserved 8.5/10
Bonus – the bakery is open 24 hours so is probably the best garage pie you can get in Durban at 3am after partying hard!
Continental Bakery
Price: R29.90 (0.88x Woolies) for a chicken ala king pie
Pastry: Puff pastry pocket – super thick pastry!
Size: Extra large pie that certainly gives a great deal of value for money!
Taste: Large chicken pieces when I got to them through the thick pastry. Lacked salt for my taste but was heavy on the black/white pepper that tended to overpower the rest of the flavour profile. Generous chicken pieces, soft and tender with generous fresh herbs.
Verdict: A very satisfying pie let down by the extra thick pastry and seasoning. Pepper taste could be overpowering at times. With the Bread Mill just over 1km down the road, a good option but definitely not the best in the area! A satisfying 7.5/10

No argument about the warerings pie. That’s green and white for the veg curry and yellow and white for the chicken and mushroom. Best pies of my childhood
Hi Pranesh. Both pies look delicious, although not a head to head comparison due to Continental not making a chicken and mushroom nonetheless. The chicken Ala king looks delicious as well. Perhaps for me, the size and price of the Continental pie seemed to win it 😂 take your pie and vaai.
I love pepper steak pie
You should have tried the chicken tikka from bread mill , thats tastier
Best pie is at midlands..kitchen and granny mouse country house
Both looked good… Bread ahead used to make a delicious variety of pies.. Dont see them around these days.. 🤔
