羊蹄山は標高1,898ｍあり円錐型の成層火山で、蝦夷富士とも呼ばれていて全国各地の○○富士の別名を持つ山の中で、その姿が本家富士山に最も近いとも云われている。羊蹄山には、流れ出す川がひとつも無いため、ヒグマやエゾシカなどの獣類が生息していない。そして数多くの高山植物が原種に近い状態を保っていて「神々に守られた場所」と云われることもある。ちなみにこの山の正式名称は以前「後方羊蹄山」と書いて「シリベシヤマ」と読んだ。「後方」を「シリベ」と読み「羊蹄」を「シ」と読む。なぜ「羊蹄」が「シ」なのかと云うと、食べられる野草としても知られている「ギシギシ」の漢名が「羊蹄」で、これを和名で「シ」と読むかららしい。しかしあまりにも難読であるため、山麓の俱知安町(くっちゃん町)が変更を要望し1969年、「羊蹄山」が正式名称になった。北海道には絶対読めない地名が時々ある。（EX花畔＝バンナグロ 石狩湾岸にある地名）
Mount Yotei is a stratovolcano with an altitude of 1,898m located in the midwestern part of Hokkaido. Because its shape resembles the famous Japanese mountain, Mt. Fuji, it is also called “Ezo Fuji” by adding “Ezo”, which is the old name of the place in Hokkaido. There are no rivers flowing through this mountain, so animals such as bears and deer do not live there. Many alpine plants live here, and it is said to be “a place protected by the gods.”
