Part 1๏ธโฃ of 4๏ธโฃ Must-Dos in Kyushu โ Check Out A Volcano & Hide Out In An Emergency Shelter
๐ Mount Aso, Kumamoto
I donโt know why I find volcanoes so fascinating. Maybe itโs the possibility of witnessing a volcanic eruption; maybe itโs about having the ability to tell the tale after running away from a volcanic eruption; or simply having the opportunity to test how close a rack of pork ribs needs to get to an active volcano to get cookedโฆโฆ.

Kyushu ไนๅท is one of the four main islands where you can find the most volcanoes in Japan! Kyushu was created and shaped by undersea volcanic eruptions that began millions of years ago.
There are nine active volcano systems in Kyushu, and Mount Aso is one of them. Not only is Mount Aso the LARGEST active volcano in Japan, itโs also one of the LARGEST active volcanoes IN THE WORLD!
This majestic beast last erupted on 20 Oct 2021. Freaking out when the volcano is erupting? Hide out in the emergency shelters made with reinforced concrete nearby, there are plenty of those and it gives off serious apocalyptic vibe!

Mount Aso locates within the Aso-Kuju National Park. There are some nice scenic hikes within this national park, anything from 1-hr to almost 3-hour return trip.
If you want to learn more about the Aso Volcano, you can also check out the Aso Volcano Museum.
As you can expect, the Aso city is filled with many mineral-rich hot springs as well. If you have another day or two to spare, I HIGHLY recommend you check out the Kurokawa onsen area. I will be talking about them in my next Kyushu post ๐!

We didn't get up to the viewing area when we were there. It was a bit active and they'd closed it. Pretty cool to see it smokin' though. We go shook by a teeny quake that night too – about 15 kays from the mountain.
