  1. If only there was some type of charting device for these big ships. Maybe they wouldn't hit things every week.

  2. Galata Seaway story one of the coolest success stories you've ever covered, BG. Way to go to the heads-up crew & captain and of course the various responders.
Do they still have yardarms to hang people from?

  3. Just nitpicking: Just "knots" not "knots per hour". Goes back to sailing ships which measured speed with a piece of timber attached to a knotted line and a sand glass timer. Toss the timber over the side, let the line run and start the timer. When time is up, clamp the line and haul it in, counting the knots.

  4. make a new law for merchant marines after the Captain Phillips adduction. They should be able to arm and defend themselves

  5. Re: "The ship did make it back to the coast of Turkey but at a snail's pace of approximately 4 knots "PER HOUR." at 2:04
You can say "nautical miles per hour" or "knots." There is no such thing as "knots PER HOUR." Anyone who says knots PER HOUR is an ignorant poser.

  6. 7 WEEKS!! So what… did the owner just decide to abandon it an claim the insurance??
Boat decided, "Na bra, you ain't gettin' rid of me THAT easily!" =P

  7. While calling them stowaways may be correct I believe pirates would be more accurate. Good job Italian government with your response.

  8. Saw the thumbnail and was like "That's totally click bait." Then watched the video and was like "Wholly sh!t".

  9. Come on BG…you are an old hand by now….4 knots is speed. 4 knots per hour is actually acceleration lol

  10. 4 knots per hour, Turkish crew must have been rowing hard to get their muscles knotted that often.

  11. "A speed of 4 knots per hour"?

And all this time I thought you knew what you were talking about.
    Bye.

  12. Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip,

That started from a Japanese port, aboard a smallish ship.

The mate was a mighty sailing man, The skipper brave and sure.

Five crewmen all set sail that day, for a three week tour, a three week tour.

The weather started getting rough, so the Captain said.

But not the fearless crew of the Tisi Maroo

And the Captain, he was lost, the Captain, he was lost.

The ship set ground on the shore of this clearly charted isle.
When they asked the Captain, "How tha F*&k?"
    He just shrugged and smiled.

With Ginsu-son, and Sushi-son too, millionaire-son and his geisha,

The movie star The Professor and Geisha-san

Here on Hitting a Marked Isle!

  13. Wow! That Ferry story was awesome! Any mention of pirate origins? Would be fascinating to learn their origin and intent.

  14. Wonder what happened to that freedom 33 those masts are free standing wonder if it had a failure or just got into the chit
