The Fushimi Inari Shrine (伏見稲荷大社, Fushimi Inari Taisha) is a Shinto shrine in Kyoto, Japan. Famous for its over ten thousand torii gates that line up the trail up to Mount Inari, it is one of the most famous Shinto shrines in all of Japan. It is one of the top things to do in Kyoto, Japan and also one of the best things to do in Japan. Hiking up the mountain going from torii gate to torii gate is truly a unique experience that is impossible to have anywhere else and that makes Kyoto a must-see when in Japan.

At the bottom of the Shrine complex visitors are greeted by the Romon Gate, donated in 1599 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. As visitors make their way up, they are soon greeted by the dual parallel torii gate lanes which are called Senbon Torii (Thousand of torii gates). Many recommend coming here early in order to experience the Fushimi Inari Taisha hiking trail without all the intrusive tourists blocking your way, but that was never going to be possible for us.

In fact, we only made past the first 1000 or so torii gates. But we can say that the torii gate lanes are small and that you move in line with the crowds. This means that you have little time to observe individual torii gates if you come at a busy time since tourists will pressure you to move forward. The space inside the torii gates is quite small.

Inari is the Japanese Shinto God of rice and, as such, has over one thousand shrines dedicated to him all over Japan. It just so happens that Fushimi Inari Shrine is the most important of all shrines dedicated to Inari. And with good reason, since it’s located in Kyoto which is the traditional capital and historical centre of Japan.

The entire hike takes from 2-3 hours.

About us: We are Daniel, Robyn, Ava, Rose and Ella, and together we are The Go To Family. We love to travel! We also love food, exploring historical sites and, of course, doing loads of fun things together as a family. In my videos, you will see me and Robyn tackle every obstacle that traveling with kids throws at us. We do traveling almost exactly the same way as we did before having kids, it just takes a little bit more planning. But it’s even more fun and rewarding to be able to show them new cultures and live new experiences with them at the same time! Our mission is to inspire other Millennials to travel with kids.

Our 7-year-old daughter, Ava, also has her own YouTube channel. Feel free to check it out right here:
