Today we’re in Nagano prefecture to try some gravel road cycling in Japan. Nagano is famous for it’s mountains and is one of the best places to ride a bike in Japan, though it can be really challenging with all of the climbing. We ended up finding a 20km continuous gravel road climb up a large mountain, which was beyond our expectations and near the peak we also found a Japanese mountain shelter so I also filmed a short mountain shelter tour video.

Today was full of good company and amazing views, but unfortunately I also had a bit of bad luck and broke my GoPro camera lense right before the start of the ride, so I was only able to take limited video with my phone. At the very list, I wanted to share some video of the Mountain shelter hut (避難小屋), which I thought was pretty interesting, and share some video I was able to take with my phone randomly throughout the ride.

I was on my mountain bike today, but my buddy Zac was on a gravel bike, which looked pretty painful on the long descent with all of the rocks.. I’ll be introducing his new bike in a separate video, so be on the lookout for that.

We didn’t see any other people or cars out on the road during the entire ride (I did see a bear though, which was a first for me), but in the upper portion of the road we came across numerous large rock slides. We cleaned out a few of them, but some of them were way too large to be cleared out.

All in all, it was a great day of exploring the mountains of Japan by bike and hopefully we’ll come back to do some more Nagano rides this year.
