In this Indonesia Travel Vlog, we head to Berastagi. It’s a popular town in North Sumatra as it’s very easy to get to from Medan and it’s also close to Lake Toba. We were able to get the tourist bus directly to Berastagi from Bukit Lawang after our jungle trek.
We heard that Berastagi is famous for having not one, but two active volcanos! While one volcano (Mount Sinabung) is too dangerous to climb due to recent eruptions, the other volcano (Mount Sibayak) is still regularly climbed by both local tourists as well as foreigners. We heard that it’s popular to hike up Mount Sibayak on a guided tour for sunrise…..however since we heard you can also climb it by yourself for very cheap and a longer hike, we chose that option.
We started by jumping on the green Kama angkot in Berastagi town which we took the whole way to the end of the line. Once we got off the angkot, we started the long hike up to the top. If you have your own transportation you can drive up to the start of the hike which will make it only a half hour hike as opposed to 2 hours like we did, but we didn’t mind the walk. Although honestly, the beginning of the hike was quite boring compared to the last half hour which was a ‘real hike’. We met so many amazing locals on the way up who wanted to talk to us, take pictures, and tell us about their camping trip! We were amazed at how many people were camping at Mount Sibayak!!! It definitely looked like an amazing experience to camp next to the volcano crater and wake up for sunrise at the top of the mountain!
Once we got to the volcano crater, we could smell a lot of sulfur. Although it was such as amazing experience! The crater looked unreal and the clouds were rolling in so quickly making the whole experience much more otherworldly.
*If you decide to hike Mount Sibayak on your own like we did, STAY ON THE TRAILS!!! Apparently multiple tourists have gone missing and even died trying to hike the mountain alone when they went off the path and got lost.*
When we left Mount Sibayak, we decided it would be the perfect time to go to some hot springs! Berastagi is also famous for having tons of hot springs due to all the thermal activity from the volcanos heating the water. We started walking towards the hot springs…..and luckily a car full of people stopped to pick us up because it started pouring rain right after that!!! They asked us where we wanted to go and we told them some of the hot springs names we had read but that we honestly weren’t sure which one, we just wanted hot water! It turned out that they were also going to hot springs after hiking around the volcano since sunrise, so we joined them! We all went to the hot springs Sibayak Ncole where they shared some Indonesian whiskey with us, we all ate Nasi Goreng, and we had an amazing time in the hot springs with gorgeous cloudy mountain views all around us! They were SO nice and gave us lots of travel tips too!! (Thank you guys 🤗)
From the volcano to the hot springs to all the friendly people we met, this was one of the most amazing days in Indonesia!!! 😍😍😍😍

then you must experience hiking mount Ijen, and Mount Bromo in east java for another great active volcano crater. It's higher and larger…
Welcome to the mount sibayak natalie and carles 😊
At 12:51, that spot is called "Takal Kuda" or horse head in English because it's look kinda similar like a horse head. They put such a device to measure earthquake on it. To get there is quite challenging, kinda steep 😅
Anyway enjoy your adventure in Indonesia, guys. Greetings from Medan 😀
What date to Berastagi? why don't we meet haha
Man oh man, the view at the hotsprings is perfecto
Next time mountain bromo
You should go to Bandung West Java not far from Jakarta. And go to Tangkuban Perahu crater. You can go by car or bike till the edge of the crater. The only one in the world

Did you fell it like in the horror movie ,,,but that was amaze..trully ..
I salute visitors like both of you looking for something that are not as closer as you had. Warm greetings from Jakarta. I enjoyed following your video as you walked through the paths of Sibayak mountain. you were soo closed to the volcano. There are so many hidden natural gems in Berastagi, North Sumatera that people do not see as you do even though we have been to Berastagi. Congrats to you both!
I am looking forward to see your video again in other part of Sumatra island that is very huge – to Aceh ("The Mecca Porch"), Nias ethnic group (said to be the best wave in the world for surfing), Toba Lake (the world's largest crater and one of the deepest in the world), Suku Anak Dalam (The Inner Tribe of Sumatera) at the Jambi province, Gadang House of Padang (famous as the only matrilineal culture in Indonesia/ Asia), traces of the Sriwijaya kingdom in Southern Sumatera area.

the water in the crater is rain water, people made those letters when the crater is dry
You have to visit ijen mountain in banyuwangi, very beautiful places
