Silence is disappearing. Even in the largest and most remote wilderness areas it is nearly impossible to find. With the help of Dr. Preston Wilson of UT Austin and Matt Mikkelsen, Wilderness director of Quiet Parks International, I go looking for the last quiet place in America.

I guess here in Patagonia we are super lucky. Thank you for bringing attention to this issue. I hadn't considered it.
Alaska has some quiet places
There’s places in the Anza-Borrego desert where I won’t hear anything. The quiet can fill up your head, just like described in the video.
The Olympic national parks is amazing. The helicopter flights aren't tourists flights they are normally working with or for the park. Helicopter permits aren't very easy to get.
Getting away from humans is amazingly hard to do. Heard recording nature without human input can only be found i 7 places on the planet now.
I love the bwca. Guided there for three years and it’s a special expansion of wilderness, especially when you get out to the more remote unmaintained sections.
Living in MN, I've spent a few trips to the BWCA & I'm very pleased to see that's the first path you took! They have even pushed back hard against adding cell towers anywhere the lights can be seen within the BWCA. Can't do much about jets, just depends on the day / time of year.
U should try going in the winter with lots of snow. Lovely silence. The only absolute silence I remember outdoors is in the snow caves I dug out as a kid.
This is my favoirite video you've made. I find artificial noise really really annoying, especially road noise but also planes. Thanks for highlightingh this problem
“I have been infected with a thought that drives me crazy, and now I want to infect everyone else with it.” Uh, thanks.
Paying too much attention to a noise that you cannot get rid of can drive you crazy. I know this from experience. I also know from experience that fighting it is not the answer.
and here I am, my upstairs neighbour practicing his drums at 8 am while the appartment next to me is being remodelled with a hammer drill. Good thing I can't hear the noise pollution the mediocre street musicians outside make because my downstairs neighbour is a chain smoker so I have the windows to the living room closed to not sit in a smoker's pub. The biggest problem with backpacking is the presence of other backpackers ruining "my alone in the world" illusion. So stop advertising backpacking with your great videos.
When I was camping in Death Valley it was so quiet that my ears were ringing. It’s was so quit I could hear my heart beating and occasionally a pocket mouse or scorpion scurrying around the sand that surrounded my tent. There was also zero light pollution so looking up at the night sky I could see the bright blue-ish purple color of the Milky Way and ocean of stars in the heavens.
Strangest feeling I ever felt. I felt so connected to nature and the universe and our human ancestors. Crazy to think that ancient people saw that sky and experienced that absence of noise all the time. I never experienced anything like that before. I think about that night very often.
This is me every camping trip. Drives me nuts. I just want peace and quiet.
Many Ukrainians people go to the Carpathian mountains to get a break and relax from the sirens in the city during air alarm but imagine the irony of waking up on a hike in the middle of the night to first hear the thud of a plane coming out of supersonic mode and in a couple of secs the very loud explosive sounds of a downed missile next to you.
A cave
Sorry to say but in Scotland we have quite a bit of place which you are looking for. I would recommend southland region. It is past Inverness.
Oh being aware of constant aircraft noise ruined my enjoyment of natural spaces years ago, along with human noise in general. Long ago I was a jet engine mechanic in the air force and well after that I will never live near a base with fighters. Since then even the noise of other hikers has led me to hike less and made "less than ideal" conditions now preferred. Just how loud people talk to each other on the trail about regular old life crap just really makes getting in the moment that much more difficult. STFU is part of trail etiquette.
Best way i've found to get that totalish silence is being there when the rain is clearing out and the wind isn't so harsh on the ears.
Great video – Ive always been annoyed by noise pollution. My awareness started after "hearing" silence for the first time in a remote part of the UAE when I was in the military in the early 90s. Ive cherished that moment my entire life and am always in search of quiet places. Can't express in words how much I appreciated this video and thanks for highlighting Quiet Parks International!
This was a great video – such a gift for story-telling! Looking forward to future projects like this if you do more
A couple of suggestion for a quieter world for you,
1. one improve your wind, so get in better athletic condition so you do not have to breath so very hard with just minimal exertion.
2. Get a divorce so your former wife can not invade your audible thinking, with "Don't ruin this for me" noise. 😤
Being married to a nag leads to an early death.
I've found myself in a couple of locations where I couldn't hear a single sound. One of them was Nemrut dagi in central turkiye… No sounds of any kind, no wind noises, no birds or any human sounds ! Very unique experience.
You're looking for Alaska…
Just as "Noise Pollution" has perforated every measure, so has Light Pollution taken the beauty of our Universe from our view. The Calendar System rips us out of synchronization with our Solar System. They hide our past, and change our future. Instead of a Paradise, the World has become a Prison… Stop Progression!
