Rakushisha Residence is a thatched hut that belonged to haiku poet Mukai Kyorai of 17th century. Mukai was a student of Basho Matsuo, one of Japan’s best known poets. Basho even composed some poems during his stay here. Mukai named his residence Rakushisha, literally meaning “fallen persimmon hut”, after a storm had taken down all the fruits of as many as fourty surrounding trees.
