Sandhammaren in Österlen is one of Skåne’s and Sweden’s best and most popular beaches surrounded by scenic dunes with dune grass and turquoise blue water. It is almost as if you have ended up abroad and few places in Sweden can compete with this beautiful sandy beach. It’s the perfect place for playing, bathing on hot summer days, or walking along the dunes and inland pine forests in any season.
The dunes and Sandhammaren beach are still growing in size thanks to the sea currents that bring sand from Hagestad and Löderup. Above the beach there is a pine forest mixed with birch, oak and other deciduous trees.
Sandhammeren extends several kilometers in both directions with chalk-white sand, all the way to the beach bath in Löderup. Those who go on a swim are advised to be careful as the currents can be strong.
Sandhammaren is not a child-friendly beach due to these undercurrents. If you are out in the water, you should also be prepared for the fact that there can be large depth differences when the sand moves and pits are formed.
The water temperature is usually around 20 degrees or lower during the summer.
In the 19th century, the pine forest was planted to protect the sandy beach and dunes. On the coast grows a scrub forest, which is dominated by lily of the valley and low-growing oaks.
In Sandhammaren’s nature reserve you can also see a large number of small birds, including the field pipit, which is very rare. Flycatchers, songbirds and thrushes are among the more common birds. If you are lucky, you can also see the sand lizard, which lives in the sand dunes.
There was a time when Sandhammaren was known as the area where ships most often ran aground when sailing around Sweden’s southernmost tip. Today it’s possibly the largest graveyard for ships and boats in Sweden. Which is why there is a lighthouse dating from the 1860s, and Sweden’s oldest lifeboat station from 1892. Guided tours of the lighthouse are available during summer months and If you’re hungry you can buy food at the kiosk.
