Seki Post Town & Okeju Workshop – The Curved Beauty of Traditonal Japanese Woodcraft Oke

An ”Oke” is a wooden non-sealed container widely used in Japan during the Edo Period, as it was closely connected to people‘s daily lives. A barrel, which is often thought to be the same thing, refers to a ”sealed wooden container” and is used in places such as Europe for the purpose of transporting food and storing(aging) wine. The lumber used is around 100 years old and the Oke itself is said to have a service life of 100 years. In recent years it has been replaced by plastics which can be mass-produced, thus Oke craftsman who do all of the more than 30 processes by hand are becoming rare, and it has become a very valuable existence.
