I’m not a huge supporter of any activities related to animal exploitation but I wanted to show you guys the daily life of the snow monkeys in Kyoto. Snow monkeys (Macaca fuscata or Japanese macaque) are somewhat common in Japan. You can find them here in Kyoto, in the ”Japanese Alps”, in Hokkaido and in other parts of Japan. They can be found in various places such as in their natural habitats, zoos or here at Arashiyama Park which is at the west end of Kyoto. Although not entirely their natural habitat, this park seems to be larger than most locations where you would find these snow monkeys. They move freely and are not stuck in a single location. You can also find them along the way when walking up the mountain and on the bamboo forest side of the river. They are pretty friendly and not afraid of humans.

You can take the JR line and get off at the popular Saga Arashiyama station, and then cross the Togetsukyo Bridge. You then reach the entrance of the park where you will pay a small fee to enter the park. Please that there is a 15-20 minutes hike up to the top of the mountain where the park is located. Be prepared to take some fresh air!
