Prague Botanical Garden (Pražská Botanická zahrada) is a botanical garden in Prague-Troja. Its most famous part is the Fata Morgana greenhouse, but the garden also includes outdoor exhibits, including the vineyard of St. Clara with a chapel. The garden’s name is also the name of the city organization that manages it. The garden includes a total area of about 52 hectares (according to another source, 46.7 ha), of which the fenced part was 27 ha. Since January 2011, another 17 hectares have been fenced. The director of the Botanical Garden is Bohumil Černý.
The Municipal Botanical Garden was not the first botanical garden founded in Prague. The University Botanical Garden was in Prague before establishing the Municipal Botanical Garden in 1775; originally in Smíchov, after 1890, it was moved to the area of today’s Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science Charles University in Prague in the New Town in Na Slupi Street. The zoological and botanical gardens in Troja were established soon after the landowner Alois Svoboda donated large plots of land (82 hectares, including Troja Castle) to the Czechoslovak state on 7 October 1922 educational purposes. The beginnings of efforts to build a city botanical garden date back to the 1930s, when it became clear that the cramped spaces of the Na Slupi University Garden would soon not be suitable. However, these plans were not implemented until the mid-1960s, when the Prague Botanical Garden was established in 1966 as an educational facility for the short-term recreation of the inhabitants of Prague. According to the original plan, the garden covered an area of 130 hectares in Troy. But that never happened; The vastly truncated original plan did not begin to be realized until the 1970s and 1980s. In 1992, the so-called introductory exhibition was opened on 3 hectares. It is dominated by a large meadow, which regularly holds sculpture exhibitions. It is surrounded by smaller exhibits, a pond, etc. In January 2011, by a general approved by the city in 2002, the garden management fenced another 17 hectares of hitherto freely accessible part of the area, including a pine forest park and observation deck, and paid for an entry. This also interrupted the historical route between Salabka and Havránka, the line between the upper and lower Troja. This step provoked sharp disagreement, especially among the inhabitants of the upper part of Troy. A petition was created “For maintaining the accessibility and permeability of the botanical garden,” which was signed by over 5,000 people. The garden management initially described the closure as a temporary measure due to cultivation measures, with the proviso that these parts were to be made available again from 1 April. Still, then the garden management and the city of Prague declared the measures permanent through Deputy Mayor Ivan Kabický. Deputy Kabický justified the actions by saying that in 2010 alone, the vandals caused damage in the garden for 300,000 crowns and other damages came from wild pigs that penetrated the area. The garden has also introduced annual season tickets for CZK 200. Although the garden is located in the Prague-Troja district, the mayor of Prague 8, Jiří Janků, managed to negotiate a discounted entrance for the citizens of his section at the end of April – a coupon for one-time free entry was published in the monthly district streets in the upper part of Prague 8 had the opportunity to get a free annual pass to enter the area.

I see trees of green
Red roses too
I see them bloom
For me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
I see skies of blue
And clouds of white
The bright blessed day
The dark sacred night
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow
So pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces
Of people going by
I see friends shaking hands
Saying, "How do you do?"
They're really saying
I love you
I hear babies cry
I watch them grow
They'll learn much more
Than I'll ever know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
Yes, I think to myself
What a wonderful world
