Based on the policy at the time of my arrival to Japan, I had to quarantine for 3 days at the APA Ryogoku Hotel. Here’s a quick showcase of how I spent my 3 days here. If you have any further questions, please let me know in the comments below! =)
NOTE: Those coming from California are no longer required to quarantine in a hotel for 3 days as of June 14, 2021, so I was unlucky and just missed the deadline.
Update for 2021/10/01 – Japan has released a new policy that no longer requires mandatory hotel quarantine if you are fully vaccinated. For more details see these pages:

Thanks for sharing!
On the last day of quarantine, may I know what time did they send you to the airport?
Thank you.
Thank you so much for the informative video! With the situation changing week by week it's hard to say what will be required by the time I leave for my holiday in the U.S…but this gives me a really great insight into what quarantine may look like if required by December.
I have a couple questions about arranging transportation for home quarantine. If you test negative and are allowed to leave after the 3-day enforced quarantine, do they arrange for transportation back to the airport that you flew from? I can't imagine you can just walk out of the hotel, but I've also heard of some people just leaving the airport no questions asked… I'm considering getting a rental car from Haneda, but it may be easier going to a branch office walking distance from the hotel. Also, were you assigned the hotel upon arrival at the airport, or were you allowed to pick from a variety of options/locations in Tokyo?
Sorry for the barrage of questions and I appreciate all the information you've shared so far of your experiences!
Hi Didi, your video is very informative. Can we buy some additional food when in hotel quarantine? I mean maybe order food to the hotel or delivery, I don't think three meals a day will be sufficient.. thank you for your information
So after your 3 days you can't go home if there's anyone else that already lives in your house? You have to go to a hotel right?
Hi, This may have already been answered but thought I might ask anyway.
After all the procedures are done at the airport, is it true that you are sent to a hotel of government choosing for three days, after that having to go back to Haneda/Narita airport to go to a different hotel to complete the mandatory quarantine? I am looking at returning to Japan near the end of the year from Melbourne with an exemption and currently looking for all the requirements. Long story short after the 3 days of quarantining and going to a different hotel after that, do you know if you can quarantine with family who already lives in Japan or if you have to pay for the hotel you're going to stay at to complete the two-week quarintine? Thanks and sorry for the info dump
Hey, just out of curiosity, what airport did you land in and was the hotel being that far a usual thing?
3days quarantine means we have to stay at hotel for days and check out on 4th day if PCR negative and home isolation for 11days?
I am loving this room.
Hi! Do you have any recommendation for private car rental with the driver?
Sooo .. I bought flight tickets for November 10th .. more likely I’ll have to go through the same process as you since I’m from California as well and vaccinated .. I understand the three day quarantine when you first arrive at the hotel and after you are let free to quarantine for the rest of the 14 days. My question is after that, can you get an Airbnb and inconsiderate “your home”? Because I planned on vacationing for 2 weeks with an Airbnb in mind. I would greatly appreciate your response
Thank you for this video
March 2022 update: Starting March 1 2022, Japan has released a new policy regarding the arrival and quarantine process For more details see these pages:
* https://www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/seisakunitsuite/bunya/0000121431_00342.html
High level important details:
* Non-vaccine-boosted people arriving from 'designated regions' (i.e. regions where COVID-19 is spreading rapidly) will be sent to a quarantine hotel for 3 days, and released pending a negative test on the third day.
* Vaccine-boosted people arriving from designated regions will quarantine at home, in principle for 7 days, but can be released with a negative test on the third day or later (so in effect a 3-day quarantine)
* Non-vaccine-boosted people arriving from 'non-designated regions' (i.e. regions where COVID-19 is not spreading rapidly) will also have an in-principle 7-day home quarantine that can be shortened to 3 days with a negative test
* Vaccine-boosted people arriving from non-designated regions will not have to quarantine
People who test positive or are close contacts with an infected person will have to do 7 days quarantine
* People who are quarantining at home may use public transport to get to their place of quarantine, as long they do so within 24 hours of the negative PCR test done upon arrival in Japan.
I appreciate this video and ur replies so much
I’m gonna go back to USA in November and back to Japan on 11/23. I land in Haneda but need to fly to Osaka but I heard they may not let us get onto our connecting flight to Osaka..what are my options to get back to Osaka from Tokyo? Since there’s no more 3 day hotel quarantine for vaccinated people, can I just land in Tokyo Haneda and take a Shinkansen train back home to Osaka with my family?
Hi! I'm currently on my 2nd day of quarantine (tomorrow will be my last day, hopefully!) and this vlog somehow very entertaining and relatable… and I'm like, why haven't I found this video earlier!!! :'D
but anyhow now I know what to do tomorrow for the sample testing, so thank you very much for this video, and wish me luck!! 🙂
Quarantine it's free?
Hi do you paid for the 3 days stay in that hotel? Like including the food you ate?
So wait, these 3 days are for the government-designated hotel, correct? And then after, you have to quarantine MORE at a separate location for 11 days? Sorry, I am extremely confused and have been trying to get into Japan for about 3 years now, COVID ruined everything. Thank you!
Only 3 days! Lucky 🙂 My 6 days feels like forever! I am hopefully out today! Those tips are real smart. I did the same thing lol
Hi, I have 3 questions, at this moment…I’m on quarantine in the hotel, it’s my 2nd day and I was wondering if they will tell me when I have to leave the hotel or just after I got my result I can go to the lobby? Also if my test result end up being positive, where am I gonna stay…and am I paying for my quarantine?
aboutta do this in like 2 days lmao
When I arrive in Japan does the airport take me to the hotel?
Do you need to pay all hotel expenses?
thankyou so much for a great content inside of the video, also its very helpfull. i have a question、on 3rd days when they done collecting sample for pcr test, how long the result will announced?
