I visited Tsutsuishi Station, a station known as a “tunnel station” or “mole station”. This station is one of the famous hidden stations, along with Doai Station and Misashima Station. Tsutsuishi Station has a structure similar to the combination of Doai Station and Misashima Station, with a structure like Doai Station and platform doors like a shelter or research facility at Misashima Station.

Like Misashima Station, there was a station notebook, and people who stopped by wrote in it, but despite being Golden Week (a long holiday), there were few people writing overall, just like at Tsutsuishi Station.
I had predicted that there would be few people at Doai Station, a famous tourist spot, and Misashima Station, which is essentially a rest facility in the surrounding area, but I encountered a family who came by car.
Also, it’s not only dangerous to go down to the platform of the station because no one comes, but it seems to be clearly monitored with surveillance cameras, and screenshots of the video were posted to raise awareness.
Unlike Doai Station, it’s not that deep, and it’s a tunnel station with more atmosphere than Misashima Station, so I personally recommend going to Tsutsuishi Station before going to Doai Station.
【About Tsutsuishi Station】
Tsutsuishi Station is an underground station on the Echigo Tokimeki Railway (ETR) Nihonkai Hisui Line, located in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture. In Showa 44, it was relocated and underground due to the double-track electrification of the JNR Hokuriku Main Line, and in Heisei 27, it was transferred to the Echigo Tokimeki Railway due to the opening of the Shinkansen.
At Tsutsuishi Station, you need to go down more than 280 steps to the platform underground, and the height difference is about 40m. There are no elevators or escalators, only stairs. Also, because the platform is installed in the tunnel, a strong wind occurs when the train passes. To prevent this, the platform and passage are blocked by sturdy sliding doors.
