Kita-Senju Station (北千住駅, Kitasenju-eki) is a railway station in the Senju district of Adachi, Tokyo, Japan. Kita-Senju is the third-busiest station on the Tokyo Metro network, after Ikebukuro and Otemachi. It is the tenth-busiest JR East station.
Adachi (足立区, Adachi-ku) is a special ward in the Tokyo Metropolis in Japan. It is located to the north of the heart of Tokyo. The ward consists of two separate areas: a small strip of land between the Sumida River and Arakawa River and a larger area north of the Arakawa River. The ward is bordered by the cities of Kawaguchi, Sōka and Yashio in Saitama and Katsushika, Sumida, Arakawa and Kita in Tokyo. The ward is called Adachi City in English.
As of May 1, 2015, the ward has an estimated population of 692,707 and a population density of 13,010 persons per km². The total area is 53.25 km².
The Adachi Land Transportation Office is located here, and automobiles registered at this office bear Adachi number plates.
The Jōban Line (Japanese: 常磐線, Hepburn: Jōban-sen) is a railway line in Japan operated by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The line officially begins at Nippori Station in Arakawa, Tokyo before the line officially ends at Iwanuma Station in Iwanuma, Miyagi. However, following the opening of the Ueno–Tokyo Line, Jōban Line train services originate at Shinagawa or Ueno; likewise, Jōban Line trains continue past Iwanuma onto the Tōhoku Main Line tracks to Sendai. The line approximately parallels the Pacific coasts of Chiba, Ibaraki, and Fukushima Prefectures.
The name “Jōban” is derived from the names of the former provinces of Hitachi (Japanese: 常陸), and Iwaki (Japanese: 磐城), which are connected by the line to reach Tokyo.
The section of the Jōban Line between Tomioka and Namie, which extends through the exclusion zone surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear meltdown, closed in the wake of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. After some major repairs, the section reopened on 14 March 2020 after 9 years without service.
