Today we venture further North and further up into the highlands of SAPA. It is a very popular tourist destination for locals and foreigners alike because of the beautiful surroundings and as it’s home to Vietnam’s tallest mountain, MT. Fansipan (3100m).

However as I tour around I want to share with you why I am NOT the biggest fan of this place, yes it is beautiful, but it’s also home to some touristy practices that leave me feeling sad and frustrated.

If you ware deciding on whether to visit Sapa or not, this video should hopefully answer that question.

  1. When I watch your video, I get annoyed. I hate white supremacists.

  2. When developing, tourists come more and more, if not develop resort hotels, where will tourists stay? Outside of rice fields or sidewalks?

  3. We are Chinese born in Vietnam and my mom was very excited to visit Sapa years ago when she went to Vietnam. She was also turned off by that scene of all the kids and adults selling things. She mentioned there were mothers with a good number of kids.

  4. Lots of poor Vietnamese parents sell their kids (boys and girls) for $1,000 and the kids have to pay the debt off at $1 a go, yes $1. For me it's better seeing the kids selling trinkets to rich tourists, rather than their bodies in kiddie brothels (more commonly known as chicken farms). Additionally there's no state handouts in Vietnam (social security), so no money means no food, however bad it looks.

  5. Paddy, if you really want to be truthful, you should recognize that this is a consequence of colonialism where natural resources were exploited for decades and centuries which sets back the country and impoverishes the population. So yeah you might be bothered by children selling trinkets but you should be horrified that you and your country is the number one offender of colonialism globally and the wealth and comfort you have are a direct result of the wholesale theft your country has conducted for centuries.

  6. Thank you for sharing this. Been looking for info about Sapa. Hoping this year, I could visit it.

  7. What annoys me (not judging you but as a mentality a lot of westerners have while traveling) is getting annoyed by practices that are a direct result of 1) unethical tourism in the region where the influx of money doesn't go to the ethnic groups but to Vietnamese people 2) colonization. Sapa is one of the poorest areas in Vietnam and that will impact the area. Of course child labor is wrong (and also breaking news it also exists in Europe, maybe you just don't see it as much in the UK), but you absolutely did nothing sustainable or helpful about it but complain that you did not like it on youtube. And no I am not from Vietnam I am also European.

  8. I love your honest review. You are so right about the kids. Kids are not a tourist attraction , it s a shame tourists take picture with those little kids.

  9. OMG this is so real. We just went to Sa Pa and was actually googling right now: Does Sa Pa have a weird energy to it? and your video came up. All of it is true. There was such a weird feeling in the air, so crowded. For us the food was terrible, not many vegetarian options and watching the kids work was very heartbreaking. People trying to sale us things all day was annoying too. Going to Cat Cat Village was like amusement park, it was all staged.

  10. I'm disappointed you didn't show us the beautiful side of SAPA Hill Tribe. I understand how you feel about the relentless solicitors and the use of children. Please roll your emotion on your sleeves; it's a third-world country, to say the least. As a viewer of your channel, I just want to see the joyful side of you along with the beautiful scenery and the different cultures you encounter. As a loser sitting at home old grumpy man like me, I don't want to see you displaying bitterness and bias. 😁 Leave that to a beer chit-chat. I just want to see only the good side of things. Thanks Paddy. regardless I'm still supporting your work.

  11. But … you TRAVEL for a living! There are always really young kids peddling things or being sold for money. How have you not seen this before Sapa?

  12. Sapa is anything but strange, it's truly a destination unlike anywhere in the world. Once you cross Sapa Valley on the on Sun World's Cable Car to the top of Fansipan, 10,326 feet, you'll be awestruck by the view and beauty of the area. This part alone is a once in a lifetime experience. Go and enjoy it.

  13. Man you look like young Michel J Fox ! 😁this is cool! And you have great content, thank you.πŸ™Œ

  14. Thank you for documenting real scenes there. The issue with the working kids is being cared more nowadays and the government are trying to implement some solutions

  15. We just came from Sapa, having spent there two days with 0 visibility.
The town itself is a complete toursit trap. Overpriced restaurants offering the same β€œlocal bbq” menu with the lowest quality possible, cable car exceeding Eurpean prices , Cat Cat village a complete travesty built for selfies and selling cheap chinese goods, β€œlocal Hmong” women running after you with 3 kids trying to sell you overpriced trinkets, at night the whole town is basically lit up by 10000 million neon signs … oh and did I mention the fact that there’s trash and plastic in basically every ditch , road or corner…?

Do yourselves a favour skip the town COMPLETELY and just go trek around the area …

If this is what β€œprogress” looks for Vietnam , then it’s a sad state of affairs…

  16. What you didn't say is that, the plantation used there is poppies and then send send heroine to China. And u know what happened after that haha. I guess Vietnam doesn't want to open that can of worms. Pity though, because history, culture and art shouldn't be forgotten because you dont like it.

  18. thank you for your lovely videos πŸ™‚ is Sapa doable for someone who can't walk long distance? I'd love to ride the cable car, but not sure if I can go for a long walk due to some health issues. thank you very much for your answer πŸ™‚

  19. You are so funny… I love how you narrate your experiences in Sapa.. I never laughed so hard to a video
