We travel to Shirakawa-Go via Takayama where non-reserved bus options are available (guide here: and by luck, given it is peak season in winter in Japan, we find two free seats for travel. Where one-way tickets cost only 3,400 Yen. After a 30-minute bus ride we arrive to the picturesque Shirakawa-go Unesco Village, which is famous for its unique winter housing, at around 14:50PM giving us just a 2-hour window before onward travel as our bus leaves (pre-booked) to Toyama, a quaint coastal town on the Sea of Japan. Fortunately we have been to Shirakawa-Go before in spring (full post on Shirakawa-Go in spring) and we are familiar with the layout and what we planned to see. So we circle the town twice, do a quick cross over the rope suspension bridge, and we rush to the viewpoint above the village for photography from above. And we are leaving again by 16:50PM
