Located along Tokyo Bay in the city of Yokohama is an area called Minatomirai, which means “port future” in Japanese. Developed in the 1980s, this area is home to many of Yokohama’s famous attractions such as the Cup-of-Noodles Museum, Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, Yokohama Cosmoworld, and many shopping centers.
The newest attraction is the Yokohama Air Cabin that opened in 2021. Built by Nippon Cable, a licensee of the famous gondola ropeway builder Doppelmayer, riders travel across the bay area from Sakuragi-cho Station to the World Porters Shopping Mall.
A one-way ticket costs 1000 yen (approx. $8.50 USD) and combo tickets with the Cosmo Clock 21 ferris wheel and roundtrip tickets are available at a slightly higher rate. Due to the ticketing cost and distance it travels I would consider this gondola ropeway to be more of an attraction than a transportation method. There may be long wait times for it on the weekends so walking across the bridges to get from one side to the other may be faster. The lighting patterns on the gondolas at night really add some character to the ride and to the area.
