This is an exciting one! Climbing mount Ijen has been high on my bucket list for a long time. For me this is one of the natural wonders of the world. Simply breath taking. Our day started early at 2am when we took a drive out of the nearby city of Banyuwangi – if you have not seen that video you can catch it here…

We arrived at the visitor center at 3.30am ready for a start time of 4am. We decided to take a guide even though this was a fairly easy climb with lots of people so it would be almost impossible to get lost but taking a guide is a nice way to support the local economy and they will often be able to share stories or personal experiences which are interesting.

The hike was around 1.5 hours up to the first crater view point, then another 30 minutes right up to the top. We met some amazing locals and even had a go at carrying the sulphur (50kg!)

This was an amazing experience – we will be back!

  1. Thank you for your nice words and for your friendly smiles to the humble local man. In his own house, I guess,.. he speaks in Javanese language daily. Thank you to Gary for speaking in 'bahasa' and for his smiling face… I hope both of you enjoyed Ijen Banyuwangi , and sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for visiting Indonesia, guys ! Have a safe trip back to Bali. Take care.
