In the Japanese town of Iwakuni, you might come across an impressive statue of a swordsman in one of its largest and most popular parks. The statue carries with it an interesting bit of martial arts history associated with this town that I wanted to try and introduce you to here. It is a representation and tribute to the famed Sasaki Kojiro and this is a brief synopses of his connection to this city. While some of the details of my run-down are undoubtedly in dispute (the sources vary wildly in the details as this goes back the the dawn of the Tokugawa era when records were unreliable at best), I tried to present all the information as I have personally learned it. More resources are listed below. I hope you enjoy and as always, let me know if there is anything else I can help with!

“The Lone Samurai” by William Scott Wilson

“Musashi: An Epic Novel of the Samurai Era” by Eiji Yoshikawa

An excellent documentary simply called “Samurai” hosted by Mark Dacascos can also be found via search.

  1. Musashi:wins Kojiro Sasaki

    Kojiro:wins Poseidon in ROR

Musashi:I'm greater then Poseidon, even Zeus stand no chance.

  2. I believe that Kojiro was technically superior to Musashi, but Kojiro was killed because Musashi was tactically superior to Kojiro.

  3. This is very interesting I want to learn Japanese movies and learn about the folklore but I never heard of this Samurai 🏯🇯🇵🥢

  4. Though I like Sasaki, I always considered him (like in the westerns) an upstart who wanted to go after all the famous gunfighters.
Please dont get me wrong, he was phenomenal, but could be arrogant because of his young age.

In the end, I have always favored Musashi because I read his book (Sho Rin No Go – The Book of Five Rings), the first time, when I was 10 yo.
I admit the strategy part of the book was over my head, but after reading it many times later in life, I grew to understand its meaning far more.

  5. Musashi respected the long sword of Kojiro, that is why he made a sword from a boat oar………….and cracked Sasaki's skull with it.
