Welcome to Beirut, Lebanon. The capital of Lebanon is widely known for its beauty. It is often dubbed, the Paris of the Middle East. Lebanon in general is one of the worlds oldest, diverse and most beautiful countries. This nation, located in the cradle of civilisations and home to some of the most historical places on Earth, has endured multiple different empires and rulers, from the Ottomans, to the French and Phoenicians, each leaving their mark to make this one of the richest countries on Earth.
However, modern Lebanon is a country in the midst of a deep crisis. A hyperinflation crisis has caused the currency (the Lebanese Pound / Lira ) to collapse, and many local people to lose pretty much everything they had. Overnight, many peoples savings just, disappeared. This, coupled with the ongoing aftermath & effects of 2020 Beirut Port Explosion, a dispute between the government and religious sectors of the time zone, and multiple revolutions has driven this great country to the verge of catastrophe.
We came to Beirut to experience the beauty to this wonderful city, the hospitality, the nightlife and of course the cuisine, but, upon arriving, we couldn’t escape the reality of what is happening here. So, this is the reality of life in Lebanon in 2023. It is shocking, angering and heart-breaking in equal measure.

An informative update on such a beautiful country. I was fortunate to visit Lebanon in 2009 and 2010. Let us hope it can recover from this crisis. The people, the food, wine and climate make it a remarkable place to visit.
As always, I appreciate you taking us off the beaten path, this is so not how I imagined Beirut, those high rises have a filthy rich Dubai vibe rather than the derelict buildings people normally associate with Beirut. Off topic but you look particularly beautiful in this video Julia, love the outfit too❤
Another familiar thing: people drive like Italians
It's so sad to se how politicians have destroyed Lebanons future
All I can say is, WOW. You two are the loveliest couple on YouTube. I get so excited when I see another video pop up.
Thank you for sharing your travels with us
Story of recent Lebanon banking chrisis: Basically the west/Israel decided that Lebanon and Lebanese ppl need to be taught a lesson for standing against them. Trump came to power, all of sudden In 2018 Lebanese banks started giving very high interest on saving accounts (10%-15%). That was higher yield then for example buying a flat and renting it. So people started putting their money in banks. One day they woke up and all tgeir savings had gone!!! My friends brother lost $100k of saving by having his money in bank… All banks in Lebanon are controlled by Western backed Lebanese.
CHIAGO IS WORSE CRIME NO FOOD WATER HOPE JOBS ,MONEY FREEDOM// ITS OVER BUD///
CORRUPTION Julia the same as in Russia
Thank you so much for your videos. I only discovered your channel a couple days ago and I've watched about 20 already.
First create a problem then show empathy to solve it . Typical formula
Hiba ft fonsi on youtube
Looks very clean 😊
Thank you for sharing good things about Lebanon. Just want to explain the term "Black market", the term came at the beginning of inflation and when the exchangers refrained from selling US dollars as they knew the inflation will increase and they can sell at higher rates. The only option for Lebanese people and traders to get us dollars is from the Black market which were individuals that exchange US dollars secretly.
My understanding is Initially accounts were frozen but since then People can still access their accounts funds but in trickles/limited. Accounts don’t show $0 accounts showing same amount as before
Thank you for the vídeo.
Very informative and empathic.
Hello to João Sousa: I’m half Lebanese, half German living in Lisboa for 21 years. I know and love your work for L’Orient le Jour. Parabéns !
Hi Julia, your makeup looks so beautiful!
Unfortunately. If it was just Lebanon we were ok but this is extensive to the entire world, due to the fact that the power in the United States was taken by guerrillas, like FARC, an armed militia leads the North American policy, democracy ended in there, and unfortunately they just destroyed the entire planet in an attempt to impose a new worldwide regime.
Now , visite Algéria 🇩🇿 butiful country ❤❤
Do you think that it was planned to happen this way? The quickest answer: yes
Tunisia & Lebanon will shine again ❤
The phoenix will rise again. Amen!
So excited to see a Matt and Julia video pop up on my feed. Your outro gave me Rick Steves vibes in a good way 🙂
Lebanon is a country of extreme wealth? I’m Lebanese and I assure you that Lebanon doesn’t have gas or oil. Unlike some rich European countries like Norway or Romania… they have a lot of oil and gas and they produce a lot stuff. The only thing that Lebanon produces is olive oil 😂
Mullahs in Iran destroyed, Lebron (Hezbollah), Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Iran thru their proxies. Mullahs are supported by Putin, and if Putin kick the bucket, Iran, Syria and rest of the middle east will be free.
a portuguese showing u around beirut!…that's a first,lol.
So far the living cost still better than any other Western countries
That is why you come to Lebanon for tourism because you can't afford your own country 😊
In the West country like Europe or North America peoples live bi credit. They can't even pay there appartements rent
In Lebanon most people's have own Place to live
So i think they don't have any economic problems
If you compare between lebanon
And western countries
You well find lebanon it's better to live
That's how it is, the government there is corrupt, and they let another country rule – Hezbollah/Iran… nothing good can come out of it
If only the Lebanese could rid themselves of their foreign occupiers , the nation would regain its place as the Riviera of the Middle East , this would take time , but once established , the born -again nation could be a magnet for smart money , rather than a hub for foreign terrorist organisations .
I would be more interested what you can buy for your converted 10 dollars…that would've been more enlightening should one wants to visit.. accommodation cost etc
What’s the going rate for a piece of street ass?
Wud love to see some interviews with locals…
Did you take the drone footage? If yes I'm sure you didn't take a permit from the army. And I advise you to stop and never fly it again, specially in Beirut. They will shoot it down and will wipe the floor with you before you get to say a single word. The port is a no fly zone, same as all the regions where you have footage from because it's literally on the runway circuits for the airport. Without forgetting that the air force makes passes every day over the whole city. You tourists really piss me off when you think you can do whatever you want here.😂
Secondly there isn't any economic crisis, it's fake. There isn't a single restaurant that isn't filled every day, the amount of new cars is beyond the sales of many years combined.
Next time you better respect our rules or I'll personally come hunt you😂
Edit: I want to specify there is no "revolution" it's a facade for a political attack on the previous president Aoun by 2 parties: lebanese forces & amal movement.
Not a single person that took part in it wasn't payed, most of them were syrians anyways hiding there faces and attacking the riot control with fireworks and breaking walls to throw stones at them. Many of our security forces were badly hurt, 3 died, one of them wasn't even from thr riot control forces yet they threw him off a bridge. This masquerade has nothing of a revolution.
Thanks for taking us to Lebanon, we all seemed to have forgotten about Beruit after the explosion that happened there. Be safe.
Plz stop doing bad publicity about our country ! Our country is rising back again and we are solving every issue 😊 thx for understanding
Meet up with YouTuber Worldnomac, he lives there.
Very interesting video. I was born in Alexandria Egypt, but have lived in Australia for the last 60 years. Whilst in Egypt, yes it is true that Egyptians holidaying in Lebanon used to say that it was the Paris of the Middle East. I feel for these people and the traumatic life that they’ve endured in the last few years.
When a company is doing well and profitable,it is because the Management is good and on the ball. However,it is the opposite if it’s failing and their managers should be brought to accountability because that’s what they were employed to do. This theory should also apply to governments worldwide.
Great video. First time watching you. Really enjoyed it. I am British living in Cyprus last 10 years. I will visit. Thank you so much for your work.
the poor girl is trying to understand in 3 minutes where the money vanished… Lebanese people spent 3 years and could not get an answer!!! Banks say it is at the central bank, central bank says it is given as debts for the government, and the government says I have no money I was already paying an exponential interest rate on my debts (the interest rate becomes higher than the debt itself!!!!)
You have a strange British accent Julia where are you from?
Truly a beautiful country and highly unfortunate it is currently experiencing a rather steep recession. However, Lebanon will have a bright future ahead as soon as it rids itself of Iranian proxy Hezbollah and concludes a comprehensive peace with it's southern neighbor the State of Israel thank you very much and enjoy your afternoon 😊😊
Lebanon economy is that bad that it’s worth nothing the whole entire economy has collapsed highest inflation in world it’s a Third world country
It was 1$=1500 Lebanese pound not 15000
Glad to see more people from the uk visiting Lebanon that’s amazing! All love from Lebanon to the UK 🇬🇧🇱🇧
Can I see 1 video without some asshole coming off as being genuine and educating initially, then selling some bullshit sponsor/scam because they're just like any other prostitute who will do anything for money. Wait till you hear about the bubble Masterworks created 2-3 years from now.
