Beppu is a famous hot spring (Onsen) resort located in Kyushu. It is known for its abundant natural hot springs and is often referred to as the ‘Onsen Capital’ of Japan due to its numerous hot spring sources.
Beppu offers a unique and diverse hot spring experience with various types and colors of hot springs. These hot springs are scattered everywhere in the city.
On this drive, you will see a lot of steam rising, even in residential areas. That steam is not pollution but hot springs.
Yufuin, the destination of this trip, is a small town surrounded by mountains and famous for its hot springs. There are several active volcanos located between Beppu and Yufuin. The highest mountain among them is Mt. Yufu. This video will show Mt. Yufu from the north, west, and south. The altitude varies from below 10m near Beppu Bay up to 800m at Mt. Yufu Trailhead in a short distance. This area is one of Japan’s “Must go” places if you love hot springs.

  1. Beppu looks like a nice mid-sized Japanese town. I only hope that the nearby volcano doesn't go off anytime soon.

  2. Nice. I drove from Beppu to Yufuin 2 months ago with a rental car during my trip. Drove the exact same path from Toyota Rental at the station until Myoban Onsen and then turned back to go to the ropeway and all the way to Yufuin.
