This time, our host visited Bungoono City in Oita Prefecture to experience a “nohaku” farm stay in a beautiful mountain village.
Nohaku is an abbreviation of the Japanese phrase “noson minpaku,” which translates as “farming village lodging,” and it started in Japan in Oita Prefecture’s Ajimu Town.
Similarly to a homestay, you’ll spend the night in a residence of an agricultural, mountain, or fishing village, and mingle with the locals while experiencing their everyday life.
Many of these are run by couples and families, and overflow with unique charm and heartfelt service. With a homely, warm ambience, you’ll feel as if you’re part of the family, and greetings like “tadaima” (I’m home) and “ittekimasu” (I’m going out), will quickly become natural.
Asayake, an accommodation facility DIY renovated from an old homestead, was created by a couple with lots of experience as the former Local Vitalization Cooperators for Bungoono City.
Asayake has a traditional Japanese “washitsu” room (max capacity 4) and a Western-style room (max capacity 2), so groups, families, couples, and friends are able to stay.
In addition, the bathtub and bathroom walls are made from hinoki cypress wood, and soaking amidst its warmth and vibrant aromas is utter bliss.
Outdoor bamboo cooking experiences are also held utilizing the abundant nature of the mountain village.
This activity, popular even with families, has participants cut the bamboo, fashion it into a cooker, and steam rice using charcoal for a one-of-a-kind, out-of-the-ordinary experience.
Bamboo-steamed rice is even more fragrant than normal, and is imbued with faint bamboo aromas, making it extra delicious.
While waiting for the rice to cook, our host enjoyed meeting the chickens lovingly raised in the village by the couple, which you can also try feeding.
Asayake also has its own home vegetable garden, and our host was able to harvest seasonal vegetables from the property’s farm.
While being shown the correct techniques, they carefully hand-picked the vegetables one by one.
These vegetables are pesticide-free, and are grown on the abundant nutrients of the land, ensuring they are both highly nutritious and delicious.
Meals consist of dishes using seasonal and locally-picked ingredients. Our host also enjoyed “tamago kake gohan” (egg on rice) with fresh eggs from the chickens raised on the farm, and she was delighted by the fantastic taste!
Generally, the main meal at dinner is wild game cooking using high-quality venison acquired from hunters in the mountains of Bungoono City. These painstakingly crafted dinners are packed with the goodness of the mountain, and are a must-try!
Breakfast is traditional Japanese cuisine consisting of Ogata rice (from local rice terraces) with fish, “tsukemono” pickles, and more.
The drinks also use plenty of homegrown fruit, offering a gentle, delectable flavor that envelops the palate.
Please check the official website for details on how to book and find each facility.
We hope that this video inspires you to visit the beautiful mountain villages of Bungoono City to experience the bounties of the four seasons.
