This video was shot a few weeks before I left Japan in July of last year at Jigokudani(地獄谷, which means “hell valley”) in Nagano. I was hesitant to post it for my friends’ modesty sake, but you can’t really see anything and I’m sure they won’t mind now since it’s to support the victims of the earthquakes and tsunami. ^_^

The word I teach in this video is:
混浴
こんよく
Kon-yoku
“Mixed bathing”

混(こん)in Konyoku means “mix, blend, or confuse”
浴(よく)in Konyoku means “to bathe”

I really wish I were in Japan right now, but it’s not practical for me to go back right now and I wouldn’t be able to help much without proper visas, etc… I do hope to go back to live in Japan someday (maybe sooner, maybe later), and this rebuilding will be a long-term effort, I’m sure.

And of course I’ll be going back to visit the monkeys in the onsen!

I thought the music sounded kinda RPG-like, don’t’cha think? 😛

  1. @BusanKevin hehe – the naked vlog thing was a bit before my time, so I guess I had to get my chance in sometime too. 😛

  2. @bizelivin Was glad I could use these clips too – they were just sitting in my hard drive for almost a year. I don't wanna take away from the tragedy that's happening, but want to be a little lighthearted and positive in the midst of it as well.

  3. @mhensley81 I've been posting everything to TolokyoRAW recently…if you ever wonder where I am, just check locolocation on Twitter.

  4. @TolokyoRAW i definitly will check out your series, i subscribed to the channel allready! will be nice to see some good footage. I'm looking forward to see some BEAUTIFUL sides of that area! thank you for the indormation

  5. konyoku – mixed bathing – man and monkey – nice! 8‹D

Old ladies are very comfy in their skins, I know.
Remember, with any luck some day you young-uns will be old too.
You actually seemed ok with the older ladies being there which, imo, is very kewl indeed. Looks like you had a happy day. Here's to another one tomorrow. *clink*

  6. I'm here in still chilly Chicago and that looks really really really inviting. I could easily see me making the mistake of pronouncing "konyoku" as "konyaku" hmmmmm…

  7. How many konyoku are there in japan?
that looks like fun, though you would probably have to be really comfortable in your skin.

  8. @onosson Yeah. :'( Unfortunately that was all I saw of them that day… It was really too hot to be there (thus we were the only ones there)

  9. @knowntothose Don't know there, but I was attacked by about 6 of them at Bako National Park in Borneo about 6 months back. The video of that is on TolokyoRAW

  10. @Oguriblubb My trip to Inawashiro was a really great trip and a really interesting exercise in excessive documentation. 😛 That and my trip to Oshima to visit NonStopToTokyo were really memorable trips.

  11. @lmtbraceface Romaji is a crutch…it'll destroy your ability to ever actually speak Japanese… But anyway, it's in the description box. 😉

  12. @BHallBrowser Yep – that's the place. Check the link in the description for the more famous images of the place.

  13. @ThomasAnthonyBowman There's a really good video somewhere on YouTube of a guy who went to one somewhere down south and actually found some decent chicks in it. 😛

  14. @Oty3d It was HOT! Actually that day was really hot, and the water was scalding…I barely dipped my feet in. 😛

  15. @jebodoh Not sure really…it's not something that's very openly talked about usually, but everyone knows about it. Not too many young girls these days would go, but old people don't seem to care~

  16. @Timothy2035 Actually it is in winter time…we went at the WRONG time. It was burning hot outside, and the water was too hot for us to put even more than just our toes in. O.o

  17. Its interesting but this is nothing special in europe where nude beaches are the norm.
I wish all cultures could get over the shame of the naked body and be free.
All this fear of it does is turn it into only a sexual object.

I would love to visit that onsen, looks nice.

  18. Is this ok to have up? Victor (Gimmeabreakman/Gimmeaflakeman) accidentally got ThatJapaneseGirl's channel a strike by posting "naked" (just shirtless I think) on her channel.

  19. Don't touch the monkeys!

I went to the monkey onsen last summer. Very cool.

I hate onsen myself and have only done it a few times out of desperation.
